Cross-route Freiburg - Lake Constance: Langenrain - Konstanz
The last stage on the Freiburg – Lake Constance cross-route leads over the wooded Bodanrück between the Lower Lake and Lake Überlingen.
Two wildly romantic steep gorges on the Bodanrück have cut deep into the molasse rock and created impressive natural beauties.
From the starting point of the stage in the Allensbach district Langenrain it is less than two kilometers to the entrance to the Marienschlucht, which has been completely closed indefinitely since a landslide in 2016! Since then the hiking trail has been widely detoured for safety reasons and leads via the Katharinenschlucht to the Burghof.
Via the Rupertsberg, a drumlin, the detour to the Dingelsdorfer Ried is worthwhile. It is the largest contiguous reed area on the lower Bodanrück.
The next highlight is the Purren – the local mountain of the municipality of Litzelstetten. From here the panoramic view extends from the pilgrimage church Birnau high above Lake Überlingen to Meersburg on the Upper Lake. In clear weather, we can find the individual Alpine peaks with the help of the panorama board.
Unique is the high path in the Adventure Forest Mainau. The combination of high rope course and climbing forest makes the treetop path a special experience.
At the end of the long-distance hike, the historic old town of Konstanz offers numerous sights.

Roadbook
Our last stage on the cross-route begins in the center of Langenrain opposite the castle. There we see the signpost of the Black Forest Association. We trust its marking "white-red diamond on a yellow background" for the last 18.5 km all the way to Konstanz on Lake Constance.
Passing the bus stop "Langenrain Dorfplatz" we follow the street bending to the right and turn left into Blissenweg, which leads us straight out of the village. At the field cross in front of the "Blissenhalde" we go right onto a meadow path that leads to the edge of the forest and finally branches left into the forest. Here we enjoy the view over Lake Überlingen towards Sipplingen. Shortly afterwards, at the "forest parking lot" we find the signpost to the Marienschlucht.
From here we have to follow the marked detour on the premium path "Seegang" to the golf course and through the Katharinenschlucht to the lakeshore. The beer garden of the Burghof invites hikers to take a break shortly afterwards.
At the "forest parking lot Eulenbach" we only follow the road from Wallhausen to Dettingen briefly and then cross it at the "Wittmoos". On the Hagstaffel we can make a scenic detour to the left to Ziegelhof. The Ziegelhofstüble also offers another opportunity for refreshments.
The cross-route continues straight ahead, along the left side of the road to the "Ziegelhofweg", and finally as a path turning right through the Faustenholz, always straight ahead. At "Am Rupertsberg" a path branches off to the right to the Dingelsdorfer Ried, while the cross-route leads straight ahead to the "Brühl". Those who choose the alternative take the path from the "Dammweg" to Purren. At "Grießenberg" both paths meet again. Over the "Milchenberg" we reach the barbecue area and shortly afterwards the viewpoint "Purren".
Through an orchard we continue and along the outskirts of Litzelstetten to the signpost "Waldfriedhof", where we cross the street to the right at the traffic light. Shortly before the "sports center" a path turns left into the "Mainauwald". Here we find the first signs to the Adventure Forest, which branches off to the right. At the location "St. Katharina" at the edge of the forest we look straight ahead at the square where until 1809 the women's monastery of the Augustinian hermits stood. Today it is part of the Adventure Forest with a beer garden.
With the Botanical Garden we reach the grounds of the University of Konstanz. At the "Parkplatz Nord" we turn right, briefly follow the street and then walk on the paved footpath towards the main entrance. After crossing two more streets, the forest path runs parallel to Universitätsstraße, finally merging into it. To get to the center of Konstanz we continue along Friedrichstraße, passing a roundabout towards Zähringerplatz street, then left along Allmannsdorfer Straße with traffic lights up to a pedestrian bridge. Here we cross Zähringerplatz street, continue along Theodor-Heuss-Straße until just before the railway underpass, then right parallel to the railway tracks to the "Rheinbrücke Nord". With a view of the "Konstanz funnel" we cross the Seerhein on the Rheinbrücke to the "Rheinbrücke Süd". On the left side lies the Dominican Island. It is connected to the city by the "Susosteig". Past Stadtgarten we come to the Konzilgebäude and the harbor entrance with the widely visible Imperia statue. 600 years after the Council of Constance, the city celebrated the world event during the same period from 2014 to 2018 with numerous events.
Through the underpass we finally reach the access to the platforms of Konstanz station. Here the cross-route from Freiburg to Lake Constance ends.
