This varied circular tour connects the Southern Palatinate with the Outre-Forêt in Alsace and offers a successful blend of wine country, nature and cultural highlights. Right at the start, you are welcomed by the German Wine Gate on the German Wine Route – a symbolic start to a journey full of wine culture, history and enjoyment. Well-maintained cycle paths take you through open vineyards and small wine-growing villages to Bad Bergzabern, before the route leads via Gleiszellen-Gleishorbach to Klingenmünster, where Landeck Castle towers impressively over the valley.

The section runs through vast vineyards and rural paths, past fields and small farms, towards Billigheim-Ingenheim and via the Hof-zu-Hof tour to Freckenfeld. It then continues through the peaceful forest landscape of the Bienwald before crossing the border into France. There, typical Alsatian villages such as Seebach, Riedseltz and Cleebourg characterise the landscape – places that stand for traditional architecture and regional wine culture.

A highlight is Wissembourg with its historic old town and the Abbey Church of Saints Pierre et Paul, where our cycle tour ends. A tour for anyone who wants to enjoy varied landscapes and regional wine villages.

    Author’s recommendation

For all leisure cyclists, we recommend completing the route in 2-3 days so that you can enjoy not only the regional wine but also the culinary specialities of the Southern Palatinate and Alsace in the evenings after your ride.

    Roadbook

From the Franco-German border, take the bike path of the German Wine Route « Deutsche Weinstraße », marked with a bunch of grapes, to Schweigen-Rechtenbach, passing directly in front of the « Deutsche Weintor », symbolic entrance of the German Wine Route. From there, the bike path leads on well-developed paths through the hilly vineyards of the Southern Palatinate, via Oberotterbach, to Bad Bergzabern, a charming spa town with a historic center, thermal springs and a magnificent castle. It is worth taking a short break here to visit the old town.

Continue then towards Gleiszellen-Gleishorbach, known for its winding alleys, picturesque vineyards and friendly atmosphere, to Klingenmünster, where the imposing Landeck castle offers a fantastic view over the Palatinate. At Klingenmünster, leave the "Deutsche Weinstraße" bike path and turn onto the Klingbach bike path (sign with a white bell, a wave and a bike on a green background). On the Klingbach bike path, continue through a magnificent sea of vines, pass in front of the old Klingen station, take the railway embankment above Appenhofen to the hammer forge, then to Billigheim-Ingenheim. Here, leave the Klingbach bike path and take the circuit of the 3 streams (sign with 3 streams and a vine) towards Hergersweiler.

After the Wahlhof farm, leave the circuit of the 3 streams. After the farm, turn left, take the first dirt road on the left, then right. Continue straight on this agricultural path. Pass in front of the Rosenhof winery near Steinweiler. At the end, turn right. At the rest area "Dreispitz", join the "Hof zu Hof Tour" bike path (sign with sun and inscription "Bauerntheke"). Follow through Winden to Freckenfeld. At Freckenfeld, turn right into Rathausgasse, then right into Hauptstraße, pass in front of the historic Dampfnudeltor gate of Freckenfeld and turn left into Wattstraße. Here you will arrive at the "PAMINA Rheinpark Nord" bike path (yellow sign with cyclist and Franco-German flag). Follow this bike path to the right towards Schaidt, which will lead you south through the shady and wild Bienwald forest. In the forest, the PAMINA bike path turns left. Continue straight to the national road and follow the signs of the Bienwald-Bäche-Tour (sign with two trees, a blue line and green area). Turn left onto the national road, pass in front of the Waldgasthof Bienwaldmühle, where you can stop for a meal. At the Salmbacher Passage forestry house, rejoin the PAMINA-Rheinpark Nord cycle circuit. Here, turn right and follow the bike path towards France.

After crossing the border, head towards Salmbach by taking the rue du stade. Once in Salmbach, turn right onto rue du Bois, then left onto rue des fleurs. Continue straight on RD104 (rue des grands Chézeaux) towards Siegen then Triembach.

Once in Triembach, follow RD645 and the new IC66 bike route which will allow you to discover Outre-Forêt where traditions are well preserved, particularly in Seebach, a charming village presenting remarkable rows of white half-timbered houses.

You will leave the IC66 at RD34 and join Riedseltz by taking RD240. You will thus discover the northernmost part of the Alsace Wine Road concerning the communes of Cleebourg, Rott, Oberhoffen, Steinseltz, Riedseltz and Wissembourg.

Join Ingolsheim via RD264. After passing through the commune, turn right at the roundabout onto RD76 towards Cleebourg. You will pass through the hamlet of Bremmelbach and leave RD76 by taking a small bucolic vineyard road on the left. Continue on RD777 and the main street of the village of Cleebourg, a key stop of the Northern Part of the Alsace Wine Route. The winegrowers of the sector are grouped in the Cleebourg wine cooperative. The Cleebourg cellar, open to the public offering tastings and visits, offers a range of wines of confirmed variety and quality. Seven Alsatian grape varieties (sylvaner, pinot blanc, muscat, riesling, pinot gris, gewurztraminer, pinot noir) are aged, vinified and blended here. A craftsman's work, starting in the vineyard with 60% manual harvesting.

Then join Oberhoffen following RD240. Once in Oberhoffen, head north and again follow the vineyard along the Wissembourg Road. When arriving at the RD3 crossroads, continue straight on the agricultural road on Oberhoff Straessel to the Wissembourg cemetery. Turn left and follow rue de la pépinière, then chemin de la tuilerie. Continue straight and cross RD77 to reach Boulevard Clémenceau and RD334.

After crossing the Lauter, turn right onto Faubourg de Bitche and follow the quiet watercourse. Continue towards the town center on Quai du 24 novembre. Both the gateway to the region and the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park and listed among the "100 Most Beautiful Detours of France", Wissembourg has remained a welcoming town where it is pleasant to stroll. From the Saints Pierre et Paul Abbey dominating the rooftops of the old town, many neighborhoods invite you to walk and discover a truly remarkable architectural heritage: the Town Hall, the Salt House, the Ami Fritz House and the Bruch district...
