The Southern Palatinate Country Tour starts at the railway station in Kandel, which is known for its beautiful shopping mile. From here, you cycle through the Bienwald forest via Scheibenhardt to where the Lauter flows into the Rhine, from where you continue along the Rhine cycle path. Through the fascinating natural landscape of the Palatinate Rhine floodplains, through picturesque villages and past numerous museum treasures, the cycle path invites you to take worthwhile detours. These include the fortified town of Germersheim and the German Road Museum, the only one in Germany dedicated to the history of roads and road construction. Continue on to the next highlight, Speyer Cathedral. Take your time to take in this mighty building. On the way south, cyclists can expect "hands-on agriculture" along the way, from production to the enjoyment of delicious culinary delights. On the Queichtal meadows between Bellheim and Ottersheim, whose traditional irrigation has been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of magnificent white storks and near Hayna and Hatzenbühl, the cycle path leads you through the largest tobacco-growing area in Germany back to the starting point, Kandel railway station.

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature

    • Be considerate when out and about - Always act with foresight, kindness and consideration towards everyone you meet along the way. This is especially true on farm roads where winegrowers, farmers and foresters work, even at weekends.
    • Picnic & rubbish - Remember to bring a rubbish bag for the road and take rubbish home with you. Only use the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
    • Conservation - Stay on designated trails and avoid unnecessary noise when out in nature. Leave the forest at dusk at the latest to avoid disturbing the rhythm of nocturnal animals.

    Author’s recommendation

In the farm shops along the route, you can buy lots of tasty treats for on the way or to take home.

    Safety information

Cycling on farm tracks - Often our cycling routes run along tracks that we share with others. We therefore ask for considerate and friendly cooperation at all times. Winegrowers, farmers and foresters use the farm tracks through fields, forests and vineyards for their daily work - even on weekends. Due to work assignments and/or weather conditions, the paths may be more heavily soiled at times. Special caution is also advised when travelling along the roads in and around the Palatinate villages. Road closures and diversions must be observed.

Dangerous situations - If an emergency situation arises, help is needed quickly. And even though mobile phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points are often the quickest. These are located in places that are easily accessible for rescue vehicles. Remember the points with the green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when you make your emergency call. This way, the emergency services will know where to find you.

The South Palatinate Country Tour starts at the railway station in Kandel. From the railway station, take Georg-Todt-Str. in a westerly direction. Turn right into Bismarckstraße and then left into Dierbachweg. From here, follow the "Südpfalz-Radweg" signposts through the Bienwald forest to Scheibenhardt on the French border. Once in Scheibenhardt, follow the main road towards the end of the village in the direction of Berg. You are now on a section of the "German-French PAMINA cycle path". Follow the signs to Neuburg, where you meet the "Véloroute Rhein". Follow the signs that lead you past extensive farmland and lush orchards to Lingenfeld. The Véloroute takes you past the Rhine floodplains to Speyer. Shortly after arriving in Speyer, you will join the "From Rhine to Wine" cycle route, which first takes you to Speyer Cathedral. On your further route, you will reach the "cycling community" of Dudenhofen. Once you have passed Harthausen, follow the signs for the "Kraut- und Rübenradweg" cycle path. You will pass villages such as Schwegenheim, Lustadt and Zeiskam. Once you reach the outskirts of Bellheim, follow the "Queichtalradweg" signs. This cycle path follows the course of the Queich and takes you past the Knittelsheim mill and the Ottersheim dividing weir. Once you reach the centre of Offenbach, you will rejoin the "Südpfalz-Radweg". Via Herxheim, Hayna and Hatzenbühl, this cycle path takes you through Germany's largest tobacco-growing region back to the starting point, Kandel railway station.
