The imposing Germersheim Fortress, built between 1834 and 1861 by order of the Bavarian King Ludwig I, still shines in all its glory today.
Once built as a "bulwark against France" in the years 1834 to 1861 by order of the Bavarian King Ludwig I, the imposing Germersheim Fortress – the largest Bavarian fortress outside Bavaria – can still be seen in all its glory to this day.

During the war of 1870/71, Germersheim was of particular strategic importance, as it was from here that the operations of the 3rd Prussian Army were carried out under the leadership of Crown Prince Friedrich. Despite the partial demolition from 1920 to 1922 as a consequence of the Treaty of Versailles, numerous important buildings have been preserved, which enclose the entire city centre. Take a guided tour through little winding alleyways, underground passageways and park-like parade grounds, and discover the unique appeal of this extraordinary town.

Buildings of the former fortress that are still preserved to this day include the Weissenburg Gate, the Fronte Beckers fortress complex with its sculpture path and the Fronte Lamotte municipal park.
