The Lauter mussel looks back on an eventful history:
The Neuburg ship pilot Ernst Ertel (*1903) and his wife Lina had been supplying passing ships with food on their motorboat since 1936. During mobilisation in the Second World War, Ernst Ertel and his boat were called up for military service. The boat and pilot made it to the Black Sea, where he handed it over to the German navy. The boat was sunk on the Dutch border towards the end of the Second World War. After being raised and repaired (around 1950), it returned to its original owner in Neuburg to resume its catering duties. In 1951, the Ertels acquired a larger ship and set up a simple restaurant, the ‘Lautermuschel’, in it. In the years that followed, the ‘Lautermuschel’ became a well-known meeting place for skippers and pilots on the Upper Rhine. With the founding of the pilots' association in 1960, a pilot station was set up in the dyke guardhouse. This was demolished in 2012. Provisions continued to be provided until the era of tugboats and thus pilots came to an end in the 1970s: modern ships were now equipped with radar systems. There have only been a few pilots in Neuburg since the 1990s. The ‘Lautermuschel’ restaurant continued to be run by various owners until a fire destroyed the floating inn in January 1991. Today's ‘Lautermuschel’ is a former cargo ship (built in 1907) and was reopened in 1995. In addition to the restaurant, the ship now also houses the Maritime Museum.
