At the beginning of the 20th century in Zala, hardly any timber was harvested from the extensive forests covering the county, despite the abundant raw material available. As in many other parts of the country, forest railways provided the solution after the turn of the century. The only surviving forest railway in Zala was created from two separate operations; thanks to this, today the country's longest narrow-gauge railway operates between the Zala hills around Lenti and Csömödér.

Contemporary descriptions testify that at the beginning of the 1900s, timber harvesting and transport in Zala posed serious problems. Villages could meet their own needs from surrounding forests, but in more distant areas, due to transport difficulties, wood was often burned instead. However, charcoal production and glassworks could not absorb as much wood as was available. When wood was to be transported, longer distances often had to be covered, but the transport was always uncertain: on the one hand, weather conditions influenced it (only dry weather allowed movement of wood-laden carts), on the other hand, it depended on agricultural seasonal work as well.

To eliminate transport difficulties, forest railways were increasingly built in Zala county as well, for example on the Rédics-Kozmadombja, Komárvár-Ormánd, Ortaháza-Nova sections, and one can mention the Tölösi, Vétyemi, or Zalaerdő forest railways in this context. Naturally, this includes the construction of the first sections of the then separate Lenti and Csömödér forest railways.

Both were intended to assist the Esterházy trust forestry management at the time of their construction. By 1923, the two sawmills of Kerkavölgyi Rt. closely connected to the trust were built in Csömödér and Lenti, and to ensure safe timber supply, the construction of a forest railway was decided. In Lenti, the tracks were first laid to the hompoki opening near Szilvágy in 1924-25 (also utilizing the earlier Hirschler narrow-gauge railway Szilvágy-Zsibos section), while in Csömödér, the already built 1917 Budnya line was used initially, with steam locomotives providing traction on both lines.

The network continuously expanded on both railways, adapting to logging needs. For example, the Vétyemi forest railway starting from the Tornyiszentmiklós Centrálé section was connected to the Csömödér forest railway with an inclined plane due to level differences, ensuring timber delivery to the Zalaegerszeg-Rédics (former Ukk-Csáktornya) railway line. An interesting fact in the railway’s development is that the railway was extended between Bázakerettye and Kistolmács because by the late 1930s, transport services in the area became significantly more expensive due to oil transport.

The continuous development culminated in connecting the two separate rail operations in September 2000: from then on, the 109-kilometer network became fully passable, of which less than a third, 32 kilometers, can be traveled by scheduled passenger trains between Lenti and Kistolmács, passing through Csömödér.

The forest railway's operation mostly still serves timber transport, mainly handled by C50 type locomotives, but there’s also a Romanian-origin steam locomotive (built in 1955 and named after the novel hero Ábel Tamási Áron), as well as two Mk48 diesels, one of which is a real rarity: engine No. 1005 is the only operational member left of the diesel-mechanical representation of the series.

Many cycling and hiking trails connect to the railway line, so it's worth combining hiking with atmospheric forest railway travel. The Csömödér ÁEV lines touch the Göcsej pine region, the Kerka valley, and the Göcsej beech landscape. Starting from Lenti, you can enjoy the Zajda forests, reach the Vétyemi Primeval Beech Forest, as well as the Budafa Arboretum with the Makk Adventure Playground. In 2021, the railway line was extended at Kistolmács, so you can now travel all the way to the popular Kistolmács Lake.

    Author’s recommendation

    • If you want to travel the entire line, plan for a full day – or travel the Lenti-Csömödér and Csömödér-Kistolmács sections separately as a two-day program.
    • If you bring a bike with you, the entire narrow-gauge railway can comfortably be traveled in one day: you can cycle back to the starting station on low-traffic roads between Lenti and Kistolmács.
    • In summer, it is worth spending a few hours at the Kistolmács beach between the two train departures, while in Lenti and Bázakerettye you can relax in the thermal baths in any season.

    Safety information

    • It is forbidden to walk on the railway tracks! The clearance gauge dimension is 3.3 meters!

    • When walking between the railway tracks, remember that a special train or track maintenance train can arrive at any time, and the forest surprisingly insulates sound well. Always keep a safe distance: the widest vehicles can be up to 2.5 meters wide, meaning 70 cm on each side from the rail, and this can be extended by protruding cargo or open doors.
    • Do not walk between the tracks at the switches and within a ten-meter radius: these areas are usually oily, the sleepers are slippery, and the switches contain many trip hazards which can be hidden especially at night or under snow.
    • Never operate a switch: the weight lever may drop on your foot, the moving tip rail can trap hands or feet, and a train arriving on a wrongly set switch can cause an accident even at low speed.
    • Keep a few meters distance in front or behind a stationary vehicle when crossing the tracks: the train or its locomotive may start moving without any additional warning.
    • The surface of the rails is slippery even when covered with thin rust during wet weather.

    The Csömödér Forest Railway website

    Roadbook

The trains on the forest railway lines with passenger transport run in "two sections": between Lenti and Csömödér, and between Csömödér and Kistolmács. Traveling the entire length is a genuine program for forest railway enthusiasts, especially if someone wants to do the 32-kilometer trip round trip by train (2 hours 10 minutes one way). As the trains rattle along the line in two parts, we also present the forest railway in two parts.

    Csömödér–Kistolmács

Starting from Csömödér towards Kistolmács, the forest railway line leads through varied landscapes: sometimes passing through a village, sometimes touching a forested area, elsewhere crossing a large field, or crossing a stream. For example, in Páka, we pass by the football field and café, near Kányavár a gray cattle herd grazes peacefully on a pasture, next to Víznyomó stop we rattle through dense reeds along a stream, and in Bázakerettye, the track runs into a somewhat industrial environment; the oil well standing in front of the small housing estate somewhat resembles parts of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, but we can also consider this area a little Hungarian Texas. The occasionally visible sidings, stub tracks, and branches indicate that serious railway operations take place here, of which only one part is the operation of excursion trains. The terminus is the Kistolmács Lake, where alongside numerous services you can walk by the lakeside, swim, or simply enjoy the scenery of the Zala region.

    Csömödér–Lenti

If we head towards Lenti, we immediately start with a shunting maneuver, then passing through a timber yard at the edge of the village, the forest railway uniquely crosses the Zalaegerszeg-Rédics railway line at grade – the same happens in Lenti before we reach the terminus. Next to Csömödér Lake, the small trains start climbing, reaching the highest point of the line near Nyúldomb stop, on a track section decorated with spectacular line elaboration, cuttings, high embankments, curves, and counter-curves. Moving further towards Lenti, a delta branch appears, whose other branch leads towards Szilvágy, then after Lentiszombathely we cross the Kerka river on three – quite long – bridges, and we can observe numerous hunting towers along the way, indicating we are traveling in an area rich in wildlife. Indeed, on the long stretches between settlements, deer, roe deer, wild boars, buzzards, and other rare, protected birds may sometimes be seen.

Several local attractions are accessible by the forest railway, or by combining train travel with cycling or hiking. Thermal baths await visitors in Lenti and Bázakerettye, in summer at Kistolmács you can relax at the free beach by the lake, but the Budafa Arboretum, József Öveges's birthplace in Páka, the forestry, sawmill and railway history exhibition titled "Treasures of Göcsej, the forest, and the wood" located at the terminus of the forest railway in Lenti, as well as a bunker system near the border of Csömödér and Páka, also await visitors.
