The route passes Aquincum and Óbuda before arriving at Castle Hill in Buda.
Continuing into Óbuda, now absorbed into modern Budapest, the atmosphere shifts from antiquity to a lively urban district. Hidden beneath the hills lies the Molnár János Cave, where the Ottomans once operated a gunpowder mill. Climbing gently upward, you reach the serene Tomb of Gül Baba, burial place of the revered Bektashi dervish who accompanied the Ottoman conquest of the city in 1541. From this peaceful garden, there are fine views over the Danube.
The trail culminates on the heights of Castle Hill, dominated by Buda Castle. Within its walls and surrounding streets stand some of Hungary’s most iconic monuments, including Matthias Church and the fairytale-like Fisherman's Bastion. From here, the full panorama of the Hungarian capital unfolds: the Danube spanned by the elegant Széchenyi Chain Bridge, and opposite, the grand silhouette of the Hungarian Parliament Building.
Budapest, straddling Buda’s hills and Pest’s plains, forms a fitting and memorable conclusion to this section of the trail—a city where East and West, empire and nation, past and present meet along the banks of the Danube.
