Though the current building dates from 1909–1913, designed by architect Győző Czigler in Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance styles, the site’s thermal history stretches back to the late 19th century. Deep wells were drilled beneath Heroes’ Square in the 1870s–1880s to tap into Budapest’s abundant geothermal springs, laying the foundation for what would become the Széchenyi Baths. These waters, rich in minerals, were celebrated for their purported healing properties, drawing visitors from across Europe.
Walking through the Széchenyi complex is like stepping into a palace of wellness: elegant arches, ornate columns, and expansive pools create a regal atmosphere, while the lively chatter of bathers and the gentle steam rising from the thermal waters convey a sense of vitality and rejuvenation. In 2013, the baths celebrated 100 years of operation, a milestone that underscores their enduring cultural and therapeutic significance.
