The Military History Museum in Budapest presents Hungarian military history from the Ottoman wars through the 20th century, with extensive collections of weapons, uniforms, maps, and historical artifacts.
Located on Kapisztrán Square in the Buda Castle District, the museum traces centuries of conflict, state formation, and technological change. Its exhibitions span from the period of the Ottoman wars—when fortresses and gunpowder reshaped Central Europe—through the Habsburg era, the World Wars, and into the modern age.

The weapons collection alone contains more than 50,000 objects, including handguns, machine guns, edged weapons, artillery-related items, and military equipment. These are not merely instruments of war but artifacts of engineering evolution: metallurgy improving range, rifling increasing accuracy, industrialization multiplying destructive capacity.

The museum also holds an impressive numismatic collection of around 28,000 coins, offering a quieter but equally telling record of political authority and economic shifts across centuries.

One of the most significant sections focuses on the Hungarian National Uprising of 1956, presenting documents, photographs, personal objects, and contextual material that illuminate this pivotal moment in 20th-century Hungarian history. Here the narrative moves from cannons and fortresses to ideology, resistance, and modern state power.
