Arnavut Abdurrahman Abdi Paşa Emlékműve
Abdurrahman Abdi Pasha had served as governor during the closing chapter of nearly 145 years of Ottoman rule in Buda. The inscription on the monument, written in both Hungarian and Turkish, reads: “The last governor of the 145-year-long occupation of Buda, Abdurrahman Abdi Pasha the Albanian, fell at this place on September 2, 1686, when he was 70 years old. He was a heroic enemy; may he rest in peace.”
That phrase — “heroic enemy” — is striking. It reflects a historical maturity that recognizes courage across battle lines. The memorial itself was erected in 1932 by descendants of György Szabó, a Hungarian soldier of the liberating army who also fell at this location on the same day. In that sense, the site honors not only one man, but the shared human cost of a siege that reshaped Central Europe.
Perched along the castle walls overlooking the city, the memorial sits within a landscape shaped by centuries of conflict, empire, and reconstruction — a quiet stone reminder that history rarely divides neatly into villains and heroes.
