The first Hungarian endurance route started in 1981 and since then this prestigious event has been attracting huge interest year after year. It's no wonder since successfully completing it is not easy at all: participants have to cover the 100 km route starting from Budapest and ending in Tata within 24 hours.
The 100 km route includes more than 3000 m of elevation gain, collected by crossing two mountain ranges, the Pilis and the Gerecse. Therefore, participation has strict rules: only registered hikers over 16 years of age with medical clearance may start. The number of participants is limited to 1320 for nature conservation reasons.
The opening of registration (usually scheduled for early to mid-April) also draws great attention, so spots often fill up quickly. Those who fail to register in time are put on a waiting list and can participate if places are freed by cancellations. On average, 70-80% of starters complete the hike successfully, though the rate greatly depends on the current weather.

More details about the route:
The elevation on the route is distributed quite evenly, which means that hikers continuously go up and down, climbing sometimes longer, steeper, sometimes smaller, easier inclines and hills.
If we divide the 100 kilometres into three sections, we can say that on the first section you have to overcome a lot of elevation suddenly. Starting from Békásmegyer as a warm-up, we walk up to Nagy-Kevély, then we ascend to the top of Pilis – inserting steep descents between inclines. From the highest to the lowest point on the route, we descend, and arriving at Dorog we can happily realize that we have covered one third of the distance.
On the next third, expect roughly the same elevation gain, but the terrain is very difficult, with technical climbs and descents, such as Nagy-Gete, Köves hill, or Hegyes-kő, whose steep climbs and rocky descents make the participants sweat. All this takes place in open terrain, where the southern sun is directly overhead if it is sunny – this is why this section earned the nickname “crater.” According to general agreement, Mogyorósbánya is the point where it is advisable to quit if you feel you will not manage the full distance.
If you continue, Öreg-kő immediately blocks your way, then through Péliföldszentkereszt and Pusztamarót you reach the end of the second third at Bánya hill. Most participants arrive here at night, in darkness, but the refreshment point welcomes them with lighting, hot tea, and company. There is also the so-called “death tent” here because those who cannot continue from here must wait until morning when they can catch one of the first buses at Tardos.
The last third also has difficult climbs, but overall you have to climb half as much as in the previous thirds. This is not a disadvantage given the length of the hike, but the conditions (and the legs having already covered more than 70 km) present a different kind of challenge for the determined participants, as this section is done at night relying on the light of their headlamps.
