At the same address, the ÖTK runs the largest climbing center in Vienna's city center. The mountaineering school has a long tradition of successful alpinists, some of whom achieved worldwide fame, including Sepp Mayerl, the instructor of Reinhold Messner. Annually, more than 300 courses and guided tours are offered for outdoor enthusiasts.
On the initiative of the ÖTK, the Austrian Himalayan Society was founded. This was followed by numerous first ascents in the Himalayas. Today, the ÖTK is the third largest alpine club in Austria, with more than 50 mountain huts and partner businesses as well as 18 viewing towers. In eight federal states (except Vorarlberg), around 40 branch offices manage an alpine trail network of about 20,000 kilometers, which also includes via ferratas and climbing routes.
