Auf der Passhöhe befindet sich die Edelweißhütte und ein kostenfreier Parkplatz. Er ist ist Knoten- und Ausgangspunkt mehrerer Wanderwege. Am Gscheid beginnt die Raxetappe des europäischen Fernwanderweges E4. Im Winter ist das Preiner Gscheid Ausgangspunkt für die viel begangene Schitour durch den Karlgraben auf das Rax-Plateau.
Vom Preiner Gscheid sind folgende Punkte gut zu erreichen:
- Waxriegelhaus, Gehzeit: etwa 50 Minuten
- Reißtalerhütte (unbewirtschaftet), Gehzeit: etwa 1 ¼ Stunden
- Neue Seehütte des ÖTK, über den Göbl-Kühn-Steig, Gehzeit: etwa 2 Stunden
- Karl-Ludwig-Haus des ÖTK, über den Schlangenweg, Gehzeit: etwa 2 Stunden
- Karl-Ludwig-Haus des ÖTK, über den Murmeltiersteig, Gehzeit: etwa 2,5 Stunden
- Karl-Ludwig-Haus des ÖTK, über den Reißtalersteig (Klettersteig), Gehzeit: etwa 2,5 Stunden
- Heukuppe (Gipfel) vom Karl-Ludwig-Haus Gehzeit: etwa 15 Minuten
Die Passstraße, auf der niederösterreichischen Seite (L135) und auf der steirischen Seite Preinergscheidstraße (L103) verbindet die Orte Reichenau an der Rax und Prein an der Rax am Fuß des Passes (Höllental Straße B27 nächst Hirschwang über Edlach – Dörfl) mit Kapellen auf der steirischen Seite ( (Lahnsattelstraße B23). Sie weist eine maximale Steigung von 11 % auf.
