Der Unterberg 

ist mit einer Höhe von 1342 m ü. A. nach der Reisalpe (1399 m) der höchste Gipfel in den Gutensteiner Alpen im südlichen Niederösterreich. Bereits in der ersten touristischen Beschreibung des Unterbergs in den niederösterreichischen Voralpen weist der Autor Adolf Schmidl (1802–1863) auf die herrliche Aussicht hin, die sich vom Gipfel des Berges bietet. An der Südostflanke des Unterbergs entspringt der Myralucke der Myrabach; er bildet knapp oberhalb von Muggendorf die malerischen Myrafälle. 

Das Gipfelkreuz (1338 m) befindet sich rund 95 m nördlich vom höchsten Punkt des Berges, auf dem die Bergstation (Gipfellift 1+2) errichtet wurde. Auf dem Weg vom Gipfelkreuz zum Sender steht in einem von einem Fels windgeschützten Platz eine Holzbank. Von hier öffnet sich eine herrliche Aussicht Richtung Schneeberg und Ötscher. Im nahen Unterberghaus folgt die gemütliche Einkehr.

Geschichte

Der Unterberg stand Jahrzehntelang im Schatten des Interesses. Ihn als Wanderziel bekannt zu haben, ist dem österreichischen Touristenklub (http://www.oetk.at) zu verdanken. Nach seiner Gründung im Jahre 1869 bildeten sich in vielen Ortschaften Sektionen. Gutes Beispiel hierfür ist Pernitz, wo sich Bildungsbürger und Gewerbetreibende am 21. Juli 1884 zur konstituierenden Sitzung zusammengefunden hatten.

Nachdem man das nächstliegende Ziel, die Mirafälle, zugänglich gemacht hatte, wandte sich der Verein den Wanderwegen des Unterberggebietes zu und berichtete noch im selben Jahr über die Fertigstellung der Wegmarkierung von Muggendorf zur Kapelle am Unterberg, sowie zum Türkenloch, nahe der Steinwandklamm. Im nächsten Jahrgang der Touristen-Zeitung erschien bereits eine Langzeitstudie mit einer eingehenden Schilderung des Weges, ausgehend von der Station Pernitz der Gutensteiner Bahn.

An Bequemlichkeiten bot sich den Wanderern auf dieser Tour nur wenig: "Die letzte gute Unterkunft ist beim Karnerwirt, das letzte Trinkwasser bei der "Mira-Luke". Oben bei der Kapelle am Gschaid ist nur Samstag und Sonntag Brot, Käs' und schlechter Wein zu haben und nur im Notfall ein Übernachten möglich." Als erste Schankwirtin des kleinen Schutzhauses wird die weithin beliebte "Wastl-Nanl" genannt, deren Vater "Im Gries" als Sagmeister beschäftigt war. Rund einen Kilometer oberhalb des Hofes im Gries befindet sich am Fuß einer mächtigen Buche ebenfalls eine "Mira-Luke". Aus ihr quillt bei hohem Wasserstand dunkles Wasser, das ehemals zu zeitweisen Betrieb eines Sägewerks benutzt wurde.
