The ascent from the Hochstadelhaus of the ÖTK leads steadily upwards over blooming alpine meadows to the Garnitzenkar. From there, go right over steep slopes into the Rudnikschartl and past the Rudnigkopf to the summit at 2681 m altitude. The summit cross is dedicated to the fallen of the two world wars. The return route is possible via the ascent route or via the Hochstadel southwest ridge.

    Tips and suggestions

The Hochstadel summit is considered one of the most beautiful viewing mountains in the Alps. To the east, the view extends over the Drau valley to the Dobratsch, to the north to the Ankogel and Großglockner. To the west you can overlook the entire mountain massif of the Lienz Dolomites up to the South Tyrolean Dolomites. To the south, the Carnic Alps and Friulian mountain ranges present themselves. Some claim that on clear days you can even see the sea.

We look forward to your visit to the Hochstadelhaus.

    Ascent:

From the Hochstadelalm (1,780 m) follow the signposts "Hochstadel" and hike over the alpine plateau towards the striking Garnitzenkar. Still on the alpine floor, the sign "Hochstadel – Rudnigweg" points the way to the hiker. Through the increasingly steep Garnitzenkar, you ascend to the Rudnigkofel. From here, the terrain becomes somewhat flatter again and the trail leads over increasingly vegetation-free terrain westward towards the summit. Just below it, you pass the so-called Baum-Rest. It was erected in memory of Karl Baum, an "enthusiastic sign maker of the Carinthian Highland mountains." At the summit of Hochstadel (2,681 m) stands the mighty Heimkehrerkreuz.

    Descent:

For the descent to the alpine pasture, two options are available.

Option 1: The easiest way leads back to the alpine pasture along the ascent route.

Option 2: Another possibility is the route via the Rosengarten. You leave the summit on the marked trail in a southwestern direction. Ropes help to safely overcome the upper rocky section. This section requires surefootedness and a head for heights. At the fork of the trail at about 2,400 m elevation, keep left and walk along the south side of the Rosengarten to Raineck and from there back to the Hochstadel mountain hut.
