Die Wallfahrtskapelle Maria Einsiedl (1178 m. ü. A.), im Volksmund "Maria im Thier", beherbergt eine Kopie der Mariazeller Muttergottes-Statue. Jährlich wandern zahlreiche Wallfahrer am Weg nach Mariazell über den Unterberg.

 

Die Legende

erzählt, dass eine arme Frau Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts beim Bauern am Unterberg übernachtete. Dabei gebar sie ihren Sohn Georg. Die Bauern zogen das Kind auf. Nach sechs Jahren kam die Mutter zurück und sagte, dass der Vater des Kindes eine Stelle in der Burg Starhemberg habe. Sie nahm das Kind mit, doch vier Tage später war der Knabe wieder zurück. Später zog das Militär den jungen Mann ein. Dieser desertierte nach vier Jahren und versteckte sich bei den Bauern. Später bekam er in Mariazell eine Stelle als Kerzenanzünder. Im Zuge einer schweren Erkrankung erschien ihm Maria. Nach seiner Genesung erwarb er ein Marienbild und brachte es auf den Unterberg. Bald zog das Marienbild zahlreiche Pilger an. Drei Jahre später wurde eine hölzerne Kapelle gebaut.

Zusatzbezeichnung "im Thier"

Für den Ursprung der Zusatzbezeichnung "im Thier" gibt es zwei aitiologische Sagen ähnlichen Inhalts: Zwei Schwammerlsucher wurden von einem Unwetter überrascht und suchten Schutz in einem hohlen, am Boden liegenden Ahornstrunk. Dieser war jedoch zu kurz und daher kroch jeder mit dem Oberkörper hinein und ließ die Füße hinaus stehen. So wollten sie das Gewitter abwarten. Es kamen zwei Bergmännlein gelaufen und wollten sich auch in dem hohlen Baum verbergen. Sie blieben aber bestürzt stehen: "Was ist das für ein Tier"? fragte einer. "Jetzt gedenke ich auf dem Unterberg schon dreimal Wiese und driemal Wald, aber so ein Tier mit vier Füßen und keinem Kopf ist mir noch nie untergekommen".

Von Wien oder Graz auf der A2 bis Abfahrt Wöllersdorf, auf der B21 über Markt Piesting und Pernitz nach Muggendorf. Von St. Pölten über Wilhelmsburg, Hainfeld, Pottenstein und Pernitz nach Muggendorf.

Muggendorf, vorbei an den Myrafällen ins Lamwegtal Richtung Myralucke. Aufstieg zum Unterberg-Schutzhaus (rote Markierung).
