This loop trail takes you through the lesser-known “back side” of the Hohe Wand and offers plenty of variety. Climbing ladders, however, should not be a problem.

The Große Klause is without a doubt the most beautiful ascent from the Dürnbach Valley to the Hohe Wand—if not the most beautiful ascent to the “Wand” period. Due to their gentle incline, the ladder sections require very little physical effort; however, you should be able to handle a vertical drop of up to 6 meters. The rest of the trail poses no further challenges for the reasonably experienced hiker, at least as far as technical difficulties are concerned. The Waldeggerhütte—which offers not only excellent food but also a magnificent view stretching from the Schneeberg to the Schöpfel—is closed on Thursdays and Fridays.

WaldeggerhausSafety information
The Waldeggersteig through the Große Klause is not a via ferrata, but rather a hiking trail through a rocky valley where you have to navigate a few rocky sections, which you do using ladders. These ladders are not physically demanding because they are not vertical and have a maximum length of 7 meters.Tips and suggestions
There are many ways to shorten this loop trail. For example, you can descend from the Waldeggerhaus back toward Gr. Klause to the junction with the Spanagelsteig and follow that trail back to the starting point. Alternatively, instead of climbing back up to the Warten from the Waldeggerhütte, you can traverse the Dürnbach Valley via the Kl. Klause (secured trail, more difficult than the Gr. Klause) or the Krumme Ries (partly rockier, steeper trail) and skip the waterfall altogether.Roadbook
Generally, you can park in front of the fence of the former inn at the trailhead of the Klause; if that spot is taken, park a few meters further down the road on the side of the road. Once you reach the end of the Klause, turn right toward the Waldeggerhütte, but don’t let the time estimates confuse you. It takes about 40 minutes from the end of the Klausen trail to the hut. From the hut, follow the blue trail markers toward the Hohe Wandstraße. Just before the road, two unmarked, somewhat hidden trails lead to the right into the forest. Do not take the trail close to the road, which ends shortly, but rather the path located about 10 meters northwest of the road, which leads parallel to the road until it joins the yellow trail (Kleine Klause) and the Jagdsteig (red trail). We follow the Jagdsteig to the road, but do not turn right onto the first forest road (it leads to the lookout) but continue along the road for another 50 meters until, turning right into the forest, you very soon reach the footpath that runs along the animal enclosure directly to the Naturparkstüberl, which invites you to take a break. Immediately west of the Stüberl, you climb a trail and, keeping to the left, eventually reach a fork in the trail after 100 meters with signposts and an information board that lead to the Kleine Kanzel. However, we do not follow this path; instead, we take a trail that leads into the forest immediately to the right of the information board at a bend in the trail where it turns left, and which is marked with white dots after a few meters. We now follow this trail to the Dürnbacher Höhenweg, which we follow for 2.5 km to the start of the yellow-marked Stangelsteinweg. Here, we descend to the road, which we reach at the former Nazwirt inn. We now follow the paved road for 200 meters until we can cross the Dürnbach River via a bridge. We follow the hiking trail markers, which soon lead us to the impressive Dürnbach Waterfall. From there, we quickly reach farmsteads along Dürnbacher Straße and, after a 100-meter climb, arrive at our parking lot.
