The ÖTK's Fischerhütte is located at an altitude of 2049 m above sea level, making it the highest mountain hut in Lower Austria. A wonderful family hike awaits children and parents on the Schneeberg. From the mountain station of the Schneebergbahn (Salamander), the path leads to the plateau of the Hochschneeberg with the Fischerhütte. In good weather, a panoramic view from the Dachstein to Lake Neusiedl is guaranteed.
Chronicle of the hut
The Fischerhütte was built in the 19th century. The following quote from 1802 comes from the naturalist Schultes: "Unless someone builds a safe and comfortable hut on the Schneeberg, it is too dangerous to spend the night at the summit. A good barometer with a thermometer, a hygrometer and a small board in such a hut, on which the hikers, at least twenty of whom come up every summer, record the observed altitude and degrees, would be very useful."
83 years later, on July 19, 1885, his wish was realized by the Wiener Neustadt section of the Austrian Tourist Club (ÖTK). A small wooden hut, barely the size of a living room, was built near the Kaiserstein at an altitude of 2049 meters. The alpinist Fischer von Röslerstamm donated 100 guilders and thus gave the Fischerhütte its name. It is said that 520 people were present at the opening. Constantly increasing tourism and not least the transportation capacity of the cogwheel railroad required repeated expansions. In 1899, the hut, which until then had been under the control of the ÖTK Wiener Neustadt section, was taken over by the ÖTK headquarters.
In June 1945, the hut, which had grown into a house in the meantime, burnt down to the ground. The reconstruction required great financial sacrifices, and so only a smaller version of the old fishing hut could be presented on October 18, 1953. Now came the time of additions and conversions. In 1963, the new building was doubled in size.
In 1975, the defective material ropeway was removed and a supply route from the cog railroad was built. In 1981, the hut was equipped with electricity and a telephone connection. The last extension was added in 1991, giving the hut its current appearance. In 2009, the Fischerhütte was connected to the water supply and sewage disposal system, which until then had only been available up to the Schneebergbahn mountain station. Guest washrooms and showers were installed. An open WLAN hotspot further increases comfort. Due to its exposed location, ongoing repair work on the Fischerhütte is necessary. However, it is precisely this location that allows a panoramic view from the Dachstein to Lake Neusiedl when the weather is fine.
