Der Hochobir in Kärnten ist das höchste Bergmassiv der Nord-Karawanken. Das ehem. Rainer-Schutzhaus des ÖTK liegt auf 2.040 m Seehöhe rund 200 m unterhalb des Gipfels Hochobir. Von hier wurden seit 1846 regelmäßig Wetterbeobachtungen durchgeführt. Heute hat der Lawinenwarndienst Kärnten am Rainer-Schutzhaus wieder eine Messstation eingerichet.

Historie

Der Abbau von Blei iam Hochobir und der Petzen ist Jahrtausende alt. Die ältesten Hinweise auf eine Bergbautätigkeit im Hochobir finden sich möglicherweise in einer Urkunde aus dem Jahre 1171. Es entwickelten sich zahlreiche Bergbaureviere. Johann Alois Ritter von Rainer zu Harbach gründete 1811 in Klagenfurt die Firma J. Rainer. Ab 1871 befand sich fast der gesamte Bleibergbau dieses Gebietes im Besitz der Firma J. Rainer, die 1893 an die Bleiberger Bergwerks Union verkaufte.

1877, nach dem Ende des Bergbaues, schenkte Viktor Gottfried Ritter von Rainer zu Harbach (Sohn von Johann Baptist Ritter von Rainer zu Harbach) das Knappenhaus der Sektion Bad Eisenkappel des Österreichischen Touristenklubs. Das Berghaus wurde als Bergsteigerherberge und zur Errichtung einer meteorologischen Station umfunktioniert. Ab 1882 gab es eine Telefonverbindung ins Tal.

1891 wurde am Gipfel des Hochobir die meteorologische Messstation Hanna-Warte eröffnet. Sie war die höchste Wetterstation der Habsburger-Monarchie. 1908 wurde das Rainer Schutzhaus zweigeschossig ausgebaut. Der Österreichische Touristenklub bewirtschaftete die Hütte ganzjährig. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges hatten die deutschen Truppen einen Beobachtungsposten im Schutzhaus, von wo sie Anflüge von US-Bomber meldeten. Obwohl die Soldaten schon abgezogen waren, setzten die Partisanen 1944 das Schutzhaus in Brand. Die Messungen auf der Hannwarte wurden 1947 eingestellt. 

Am 25. September 2004 wurden am Hochobir zwei Gedenktafeln des ÖTK enthüllt, die an die ehemalige meteorologische Station "Hannwarte" und an das ehemalige "Rainer Schutzhaus" erinnern.

Unter gemeinsamer Anstrengungen der ÖTK-Sektion Südkärnten und der ansässigen Bergrettung wurde in den Jahren 1951 bis 1954 die 400 m tiefer gelegene Eisenkapplerhütte als Nachfolgerin des Rainer-Schutzhauses errichtet und 1958 als Herberge adaptiert. Das Schutzhaus des ÖTK ist heute über eine asphaltierte Mautstraße erreichbar.

Erreichbar ist die Ruine über die Eisenkapplerhütte, welche an der Südseite des Hochobir am Ende einer apshaltierten Mautstraße liegt. Die Mautgebühr für die Fahrt zur Eisenkappler-Hütte beträgt € 6,00. Die Bezahlung der Maut am Automaten ist nur mit Münzen möglich. Kein Papiergeld, keine Bankomatkarte, kein Wechselgeld. Bitte vor der Auffahrt vergewissern, dass man ausreichend Münzen dabei hat. Im Infobüro am Hauptplatz von Bad Eisenkappel kann man einen “Chip” kaufen. Die Mautstraße ist nur in der Zeit von 1. Mai bis 31. Oktober eines jeden Jahres befahrbar.
