Climate in Spain

Climatically, Spain is one of the warmest countries in Europe with over 3000 hours of sunshine per year. A predominantly Mediterranean climate with dry summers, mild winters and balanced temperatures provides ideal conditions for outdoor activities. However, the climate varies within the country depending on the geographical location and particular landforms.

Take advantage of the warm spring and autumn days and mild winter months of the Mediterranean climate for hiking in the Mediterranean region and the Balearic Islands. Or experience the green landscapes of the north from spring to autumn: The Atlantic climate, which extends from the Pyrenees to Galicia, has given rise to lush deciduous forests there. If you are looking for pleasant temperatures all year round, the subtropical climate of the Canary Islands is a real guarantee. Amazing volcanic moonscapes and extraordinary ecosystems await you. Snow can also be found in the Spanish mountainous regions, especially during the winter months: Enjoy the beauty of the snowy landscapes created by the mountain climate in such spectacular places as the Pyrenees or the Sierra Nevada, or in the many almost unknown mountain worlds in the inland of the country.

Spanish beaches

Over 8000 kilometers of coastline offer many sun and beach experiences for a relaxing stay where you can enjoy the sea. Spend unforgettable moments on one of the most beautiful coasts in Europe. More than 500 Spanish beaches are certified to have the cleanest waters by the ‘Blue Flag’ association. This makes Spain the country in Europe with the most Blue Flag awards. From the warm and crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean coast to the rougher waters of the Atlantic coasts of Andalusia and Galicia to the Bay of Biscay coast in the north, the mainland offers a wide variety of beaches of different characters. On the islands, the four Balearic Islands with their beautiful bays called calas and the Atlantic beaches of the Canary Islands partly inspire with black sand of volcanic origin or with white endless dune landscapes. In Spain, everyone is guaranteed to find their favorite beach.

Spain’s culture

You are architecture fans? Then visit such amazing and unique monuments as the Sagrada Familia by the genius builder Gaudí, the Mezquita of Córdoba and the Alhambra of Granada, the latter two landmarks of the Muslim heritage in Spain. Or immerse yourself in Roman times at the aqueduct of Segovia or the Roman theater of Mérida. And admire the medieval heritage in cities like Ávila or Cáceres. With 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Spain ranks third in the world.

And hardly any other country offers so many excellent festivals for music, theater and film. Some top events are the International Film Festival of San Sebastián, the FIB in Benicàssim or the Festival of Classical Theater in Almagro. And if you come in the summer, look forward to the many outdoor festivals.

Spanish cuisine

Spanish cuisine is now a world leader. The combination of avant-garde Spanish cuisine, the Mediterranean diet – which is part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage – and the diverse gastronomic traditions of the different regions make the Iberian Peninsula a gastronomic hotspot. With some 260 Michelin stars, Spanish cuisine is now among the most prestigious in the world.

Spain's traditional regional cuisines are defined above all by the quality and freshness of their ingredients. That's why Spaniards still like to shop in the many market halls. Here, they can find local vegetables, fruits, meat, fish and seafood necessary for the preparation of all kinds of tapas or traditional dishes such as paella, gazpacho and the typical meat and fish dishes. Why not try a tasting of quality Spanish dishes in one of the many gourmet market halls, of which there is now a large number throughout Spain, offering unique culinary experiences for visitors.
