The 10 most beautiful hiking trails in Spain
Spain's nature
Spain's diverse ecosystems - a total of 27% of its territory is protected - are home to an exceptionally rich flora and fauna with many endemic species. Spain has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the countries with the most biosphere reserves in the world, with a total of 52 on 12% of its territory. The conservation of the environment and its sustainable development are of fundamental importance in Spain. For this reason, there are many protected natural areas (CETS) that comply with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism.
Among the different protected natural areas, the 15 national parks stand out, of which the Garajonay, Doñana and Teide National Parks are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The diversity of Spain's natural areas offers excellent conditions for anyone who wants to be active in nature. Pack your rucksack and take good shoes with you - thousands of kilometers of designated hiking trails await you in Spain.

Spain's mountains
On average, Spain is 660 m above sea level and is the European country with the most mountains and elevations after Switzerland. Hiking and mountaineering enthusiasts will therefore get their money's worth here. The most important mountain ranges in Spain are the central plateau Meseta Central, which covers the entire interior of the peninsula; the Iberian Central System (Sistema Central) in the center of Spain; the Pyreneeson the border with France; the Cantabrian Cordillera, which runs parallel to the entire northern Spanish Atlantic coast; the Sierra Morena and the Sistema Bético in Andalusia, which also includes the Sierra Nevada near Granada with the 3.479 m high and thus the highest mountain on the Spanish mainland, the Pico Mulhacén, as well as the Sistema Ibérico in the east.
On the Balearic Islands, the Sierra de la Tramuntana on Mallorca is the most important mountain range. With the exception of the two eastern islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, the Canary Islands, which have volcanic origins, have a distinctly mountainous landscape. Tenerife is home to Spain's highest mountain, the 3,715-metre-high Teide.

Birdwatching in Spain
If you take a break during a hike, you can take the opportunity to observe birds. This is because Spain is located on one of the most important bird migration routes between Europe and the African continent. With 92 inhabitants per square kilometer, Spain is relatively sparsely populated and appears almost deserted in the natural, rural areas. An ideal retreat for birds, thousands of which choose Spain as a breeding and resting place every year. There are over 450 bird species in Spain and more than 280 of them breed here. The country is home to the most important European populations of purple grouse, white-headed duck and marbled duck. Spain is also a paradise for birds of prey: Bearded vultures, griffon vultures and golden eagles are native here.
Highlights for birdwatchers on the mainland are the Coto de Doñana National Park in Andalusia, a paradise for flamingos, and the Monfragüe National Park in Extremadura, which is home to a huge colony of vultures.
Hiking areas and routes in Spain
Spain is a paradise for outdoor sports activities. Here you have a wide range of opportunities to practice your favorite sport in beautiful natural areas. Put on your hiking boots and follow in the footsteps of history on the Way of St. James and other kilometers of routes.
With more than 60,000 km of designated hiking routes and a mild climate, Spain is one of the best destinations for this sport. The long routes of a "Gran Recorrido" (GR) are marked in red and white, while shorter routes of a "Pequeno Recorrido" (PR) are marked in yellow and white. Finally, the small local circuits with distances of less than ten kilometers of the "Senderos Locales" (SL) have green markings and are particularly suitable for excursions with children or people with less physical fitness or for shorter hikes.
Caminos Naturales (nature trails)
Since 1993, more than 10,200 km of nature trails have been created throughout Spain under the auspices of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. They run along old transportation routes through rural regions. These include disused railroad lines such as the Vías Verdes (Green Paths), disused public paths and old trails, canals and former towpaths that were once used to pull ships through the canals, as well as millennia-old routes used to move cattle.
The nature trails open up the rural and natural areas of Spain to hikers, cyclists and horse riders. Far away from traffic and noise, you embark on a journey through their history and traditions.
