Costa Cálida

The Costa Cálida is a 250 kilometre stretch of coast between the port city of Cartagena in the northeast and the holiday resort of Águilas in the south. Quiet bays and small beaches characterize the landscape of this Mediterranean coast. Its location in the Gulf of Mazarron ensures warm water temperatures and thus optimal conditions for windsurfers, sailors, water skiers and divers. The mountains reaching to the coast are suitable for a hikingtour. The highlight is Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, El Mar Menor.

Excellent walk on good roads and paths. Exposed to the sun for most of the walk so an early or late start is recommended.

Sehr beeindruckende Festungsanlagen, natürlich touristisch schon stark besucht. Wer den Weg weiter bis zum Leuchtturm folgt, findet aber auch einsame Abschnitte. Mega Landschaft

A fairly easy walk by virtue of being almost entirely on surfaced roads. But on a fine morning in March the views up to Cortijo Cabrera were stunning. The wildflowers were profuse. In the afternoon the scenery was flattened by the shifting sun, so the morning is definitely the time for this walk. The ruined church is a charming spot surrounded on three sides by the mountains.

An enjoyable walk but quite demanding in places. Would class as hard rather than moderate due to scrambles and some exposures on sea cliffs.

Wunderfull tour with some climbing. I did the walk the other way round and I would recommend this, because the more difficult parts are on the way from the beach to the peak along the ridge. It is also easier to find the way up the hill the on the descent.

A great walk until the last section- no clear path, overgrown and therefore difficult to navigate. Otherwise, glorious vistas, lots of evidence of the mining, and a couple of short tunnels to walk through

Great walk, with fabulous views. We did the walk backwards (from the starting point by the picnic benches) then shortened it by about a third by cutting across the track (marked clearly on the map). With a stop for a sandwich this still took about 3 hours. Relatively easy going, missed one of the turn offs (on to a track from a lane) but should have noticed the post with a cross on it!

Most of this circular route was easy to follow with the app EXCEPT river bed section. My error: There was a (very) little rain yesterday. It was enough to make the “dry river bed” wet in some places - the places where there’s the most gorse, prickly scrub & bamboo. This made that section of the walk difficult in places, & very slow. Lost a star as the route line (on the map) around the early section of the dry river bed was in the wrong place - favouring the path up the hill. I was using the app rather than the text. The river bed was wet in places, so having a path alongside it being marked as the route seemed great initially! I tried to rejoin the river bed a few hundred yards late, as the path crossed it, but the app told me I was off route - so I went up the path across the bed. I quickly found myself 40’ above the river bed & unable to get back down it. After trying to cut back to the route further on, I gave up & had to retrace my steps. In summary: This is a good circular route but do not use if it has rained in the last week! Take care to watch the following places: 1. Go off road (straight on) as soon as the road bears right in the early section - you can see on the map it was done wrong 2. Get on the river bed correctly & stay on it until you meet the road c1.5 miles later - ignoring the “you are off route” messages 3. Just after leaving the river bed, the T junction in the clearing (mentioned in the text) is a few hundred yards after the road - not the Y junction as soon as you join the road.
