Attractions in Asturias

Magnificent landscapes, exciting outdoor activities and cultural heritage

Asturias, an autonomous community in the north of Spain, is characterized by its impressive nature, rich culture and culinary traditions. Nestled between the Cantabrian Sea and the Picos de Europa, the region offers a diverse landscape of coastlines, mountains and green valleys.

The Asturian coast is known for its picturesque fishing villages such as Tazones and Lastres, which enchant with their narrow streets and breathtaking sea views. Beaches such as Playa de Vega and the unique, hidden beach of Gulpiyuri invite you to linger. Inland, the majestic Picos de Europa rise up, a mountain range that attracts hikers and nature lovers alike. Here you will find deep gorges, dense forests and an abundance of wildlife.

Asturias has a rich cultural heritage, which is reflected in pre-Romanesque churches, traditional hórreos (granaries) and lively festivals. In culinary terms, the region is known for its cider, sidra, which is served in local sidrerías. Typical dishes such as fabada asturiana, a hearty bean stew, and the wide variety of cheeses, including the famous cabrales, are evidence of Asturias' gastronomic diversity.

Hiking in Asturias

Asturias is a paradise for hikers, with a variety of routes that lead through impressive landscapes. The Picos de Europa National Park offers numerous trails through spectacular mountain landscapes with steep peaks and deep valleys. One highlight is the Ruta del Cares, an approximately 12-kilometre-long trail that runs along the Cares Gorge and offers breathtaking views. Another recommended route is the Senda del Oso, a 22-kilometre, well-maintained path that is suitable for both hikers and cyclists and leads through former mining areas and dense forests.

Road cycling in Asturias

For racing cyclists, Asturias offers varied routes along the rivers and through the mountains. The route along the River Nalón, for example, leads through picturesque landscapes and is part of the GR-208, a 165-kilometre circular route divided into eight stages. Another highlight is the cider route, a 45-kilometre route that passes through areas where the traditional cider is produced. This route starts in Nava, famous for its cider museum, and passes through villages such as Pintueles, Anayo and Sietes, past dense forests and along the Piloña river.

Great hike to a commanding viewpoint above Arenas. Even if the clouds are down on the Picos, the views of the valley and foothills are spectacular. Way-finding can be a bit tricky after Fuente la Batuva -- keep an eye out for the faded red dots. This guide, and others, talk about "broom" on the route down. They lie - it's actually gorse! And there are added brambles and hawthorn at higher levels. Long trousers are recommended!

The route up to the first peak (Pena L’Alba) is not as indicated by this routing. So don’t turn right where it shows, keep walking up the track until you enter a field and then turn right. Then it is a scramble to the top (so this part of the route is not moderate) but worth it to see the vultures perched along the crags. We couldn’t get to the second peak as the path was ill defined and overgrown but this was in August so is possibly navigable outside the summer months. Otherwise a great walk mostly on gravel roads.

This is a lovely, highly popular route along the line of the river Cares and the canal carved into the mountain. However the profile and timing is incorrect, the return trip is 1,400m of gain and drop, and 5-6 hrs of hiking.

An excellent hike, easier than it seems: it is NOT 900 meters of ascent. And you can easily skip the visit to the bivuac. This hike takes you deep into the Picos de Europa, with nice views the whole way. And the view only gets better as you walk.

I hiked the loop in the opposite direction, climbing Peña Castil from Terenosa and going down from Urelliu. The views are spectacular and the route is not too difficult or dangerous, even though the upper part is more serious mountain hiking than the "highway" back from Urelliu to Terenosa. There are some steep parts with loose rocks, but only very few are exposed and I used my hands only a few times. Can get harder if wet. Peña Castil does not add difficulties and is worth the detour. You won't meet lots of people up there, but there is emergency call coverage in most parts. Refugio Terenosa is a very cozy hut (only ~20 beds) and can be accessed within 45min of easy hiking from parkings at the end of the dirt road starting near Sotres.

I walk a lot mainly in the UK coastal paths. This is not a challenging walk but extremely enjoyable, scenic and possibly the most enjoyable walk of my lifetime. I walked in October and it was busy. I would not like to walk it in Jul/ August when I assume it is much busier. Not for people who suffer from vertigo!
