    Energy management

The route’s elevation profile is quite complex: there are high points at kilometers 2, 4.5 and 9, so it’s not very long but offers an intense run.

    Recommended period

Can be completed at any time of day. About half the route is shaded.

Our trail running section is supported by Dockyard. The route is recommended by the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary’s most successful active trail runner.

    Safety information

On the Madár-szirt rock trail, keep a reasonable cautious distance from the cliff – especially in windy weather.

    Itinerary

    • Start from the parking lot on the S trail and stay on it for 4 km crossing Kő-hegy.
    • At Dobogó-hegy, join the P trail, then after a short unmarked section reach the P+ trail.
    • When P+ ends, continue following the P trail for another 4 km.
    • At the bottom of the last descent, switch to an unmarked trail and return to the starting point via Nap-hegy.

    Detailed route description

From the parking lot, head right onto the S trail—this is the first 4 km of the route. Soon after turning left, start climbing steeply but briefly on a single-track trail. You will encounter a winding, gently ascending and descending comfortable running surface in a relatively dense young forest, then the path widens and ascends. Exiting the forest, run parallel for a while to a meadow on the left, then turn right onto a clearing to climb uphill. The increasingly steep trail ends with loose, slippery debris—proceed carefully here.

After reaching the ridge, turn right on the S trail and start the partial loop around Kő-hegy summit. Enjoy a scenic run lined by tall pines with beautiful views of Biatorbágy and its surroundings. Before the end of the loop, arrive at the large flat rocks of Kő-hegy. First, pass the Négyes-szikla rock with a view of Iharos-hegy opposite and the valley below where you will descend shortly. Next is Hármas-szikla, then turn right and start descending. Due to the steep, rocky, and slippery terrain next to and under the rocks, cautious stepping holding onto trees will be needed more than running, but the terrain softens somewhat further down—move carefully downhill the entire way.

At the valley bottom, cross on a forestry road and ascend again through a clearing, then at the upper third, turn left onto a narrow single-track trail, still following the S trail. Run comfortably through shrubland from the forest, then exit to an open area offering wide views of surrounding mountains. The panorama from left to right includes János-hegy, the Budaörs Kopárok with Út-hegy and Odvas-hegy, as well as Törökugrató and Törökbálint. Continuing through the shrubland, the path begins to descend, then at the end turn right and descend straight through a clearing. You cross a comfortable, wide oak forest trail, then arrive at a long, straight section leading up to Dobogó-hegy. The lower part ascends gently, but crossing an asphalt road it becomes very stony and steeper. It is worth pausing (which is easy) to turn around and refresh with the distant views of János-hegy and Hármashatár-hegy.

After passing the highest point of Dobogó-hegy, at the end of a flatter section the S and recently joined P trail turn left at the crossroad, but continue straight ahead on an unmarked route. There are no signs yet, but this is already the P+ trail. Exiting the forest, descend slightly along the upper houses until the gravel road narrows into a single-track trail; then enter the forest. Under the pines where large, flat white rocks hide, a wild section begins, with a romantic old stone bridge ruin at the bottom, where the P+ trail ends. Continue straight on the P trail, which is accompanied on the right side by huge rocks along the gently descending, partly rocky but comfortable single-track path.

At a fork, turn right towards Nyakas-kő, and soon arrive below it. Here turn left and before Madár-szirt you face a very steep, crumbly, slippery short section requiring careful stepping. After that, the trail on the Madár-szirt rocks along the mountain edge is yours: enjoy fantastic views left to Nyakas-kő and the landscape below towards Etyek and Herceghalom, then further on and slightly right the angle and view change. To the north appears Nagy-Kopasz with the Csergezán lookout, and beyond the ridges of the right bank hills of the Danube bend you can see as far as Börzsöny.

After Madár-szirt, cross a clearing and turn left onto a dirt road along which you start ascending again past the upper houses. Turning onto Szarvas road you continue steadily up, then after the top of Öszvér street where only the Iharos-hegy summit rises to the right above you, descend and return to nature. The slope is not rocky or root-laden, and you can start running more dynamically in the valley. At a junction with large stones on the path, turn right on the P trail and soon descend to Szily Chapel, with its round, shingle-domed building from the early 19th century. Circumvent the monument and continue on the P trail. Descending steadily, you reach the valley between Közép-hegy and Kő-hegy; looking up to the right, you can clearly see the pine row trail on Kő-hegy summit where the run began, along with the rocks of Kő-orr.

Continuing, the valley widens and flattens. At a point, leave the P trail and turn right onto an unmarked, steeply ascending trail, which after climbing turns left onto the Nap-hegy ridge. Run along the narrow but comfortable trail on the ridge to Nap-hegy summit, then turn right and descend steeply to return to the Madár-forrás parking lot.
