Distribution of effort
The elevation profile of the run is climb-plateau-descent style: in the first two kilometers, we cover more than two-thirds of the total elevation with a steady, mild to moderate climb due to the distance. Then, two more intense, that is, short and steep 35 m climbs await us.
Recommended period
Can be completed at any time of the day. Most of the route is shaded and forested.
Our trail running section is supported by Dockyard. The route is recommended by the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary's most successful active trail runner.
Author’s recommendation
- The run can also be combined with a family program: while we run the loop, others can hike up to the Kis-Hárs Hill lookout located 1.8 km from the starting point.
-
The Gyermekvasút's Hűvösvölgy terminus offers a water source thanks to the faucet in front of it, and depending on the opening hours, it provides other comfort facilities before (and especially) after running, from restrooms to pizza. All this also contributes to the family-friendly nature of the running loop.

Safety information
From the Z↺ trail turning to the P trail, a steep and very rocky section follows, where we should run very carefully, but beginners are better off walking. Safety first!

Detailed description of the route
If we arrive by tram, we start walking back from the terminus at its lower end; if we come by car, after crossing the pedestrian crossing from the parking lot and going through the underpass under the rails, we find the stairs at the top of which we turn left onto the S trail. This is a comfortable two-track forest road. If necessary, slightly further up, across from the railway station, there is a drinking water faucet. Soon, we reach Nagykovácsi road, which we cross, and the path begins to climb. Moving parallel with the Children's Railway, a horizontal section follows, then crossing the rails, the path gently climbs and becomes rockier.
At an intersection, the S▲ trail turns left; it is only 100 m long and gains 15 m elevation, leading up to the Kis-Hárs Hill peak, where—unless it is a weekend, as then it is hopeless to avoid queues—we can run up to the top of the double spiral staircase-built Makovecz lookout from 1977.
Returning to the intersection, we continue left on the Z↺ trail, mostly on flat forest paths, crossing the rails again towards Szépjuhászné station. Bypassing it from below, we remain on the Z↺ trail, running above the tree nursery. The path first begins to descend and leads parallel to Budakeszi road, then turning right, it starts to climb. We reach a lookout spot in a curve, which is the highest point of our run (371 m). From here, the path descends, while Adyliget and Máriaremete houses can be seen in the distance. After 100 m, at another resting spot, we turn left onto the P trail.
The path here begins descending more steeply and becomes a very rocky, single-track path—beginners should proceed cautiously and may even walk. After 600 m, we reach Szépjuhászné road, where we turn right at the barrier onto the P+ trail, now on a comfortably soft forest path instead of rocky. At the end of this section, we reach Nagykovácsi road, which we cross, and running alongside the Hűvösvölgyi Nagyrét, we reach its left upper end, where we turn onto the K trail and continue straight to the asphalt of Nagyrét street. Here we turn right onto Villám street, the S↺ trail.
The street ascends steeply. At the top, following the S↺ trail, we turn right and first descend on a rocky single-track path, then on a soft forest path to a T-junction where the S↺ trail joins the K trail. Here, turning left, we return on these to the tram terminus.
