Selected alternatives for you
A running loop that touches both the lower and upper stations of the Libegő, thus including the significant elevation difference between them, featuring a classic "only up, then only down" curve. Ideal for occasions when you want a more intense run over a shorter distance and time. Not to mention, it rewards us with several viewpoints.

    Energy distribution

Two-thirds of the route length steadily climbs with changing steepness from the start, so it is advisable to warm up thoroughly and begin slowly.

    Recommended period

Can be completed at any time of day. Most of the route is shaded.

Our trail running section is supported by Dockyard. The route recommender is the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary's most successful active trail runner.

    Author’s recommendation

    • Except for a few hundred meters, the route is shaded, making it a good choice even in hot summer weather.
    • At the highest point of the route, at the playground opposite the Libegő upper station, there is a blue push well, which can be useful upon arrival. However, keep in mind that it only operates from late spring to autumn.
    • If you have the will and strength, you can run up from the Libegő upper station on the tartan running track to the Erzsébet lookout located on the János-hegy peak; this is an additional 740 m round trip, with a 30 m intense climb.
    • If you have a sports watch suitable for navigation, you can download the track using the above "GPX download" button, but if you bring a phone, you can also navigate by opening the run directly with it.

    Safety information

    • During the descent after the Libegő upper station, we cross the asphalt road several times, where cyclists and even vehicles with permits may travel, so be attentive.
    • On the forest sections of this descent, we also cross trails used by downhill bikers coming from above. Since they travel at high speeds, if you listen to music while running, it is definitely advisable to turn it off here for easier and quicker awareness.
    • On the forest sections of the descent, run with extra caution, especially in wet weather or during periods covered with autumn leaves or snow, due to steep and in some places rocky terrain.

    Itinerary

    • From the bus stop, start climbing the stairs on Csiga street, running all the way under the cableway. At its top, turn onto the Z and Z↺ trails, then at their junction, turn left to continue on the Z↺ mark.
    • At the meeting point of Z↺ and Z+, continue straight on the Z+ trail, which further up is complemented by P and S markings; from here follow the S mark.
    • After the common section of S and S+, run on the S+ trail to the playground opposite the Libegő upper station, where on a short stretched section turn left to follow the P mark to the viewing terrace beside the station.
    • From the panoramic terrace, begin descending on the K▲ trail: crossing the asphalt road several times, then running past the Tündérhegy quarry and the Tündér rock, you reach the asphalt of Zugligeti street and return on it to the Libegő lower station.

    Detailed description of the run

The bottom of Csiga street stairs is not visible from the bus stop and the Libegő building, so it is not easy to find. Head toward the camping entrance and before reaching the tram car, turn right to connect. The climb starts immediately steeply, running all the way under the Libegő. At the top of the stairs, at the asphalt T-junction, turn left and run another 50 meters under the Libegő, then turn right onto the dirt road marked Z and Z↺ entering the forest.

Continue climbing, and upon reaching the asphalt of Jánoshegyi street, cross it and turn left to follow the Z↺ mark, which soon bends left, but continue straight on the now Z+ marked trail. Further up, it is complemented by P and S markings. At the end of this section, continue straight on the S trail, starting with a harder climb, then gentler climbs with some flat stretches.

Further up, the S+ joins the S, then again a stronger climb follows, ending at the playground opposite the Libegő upper station. Here, turn left following the P mark, cross the asphalt road and pass the terrace left from the Libegő upper station, offering a very nice view of the city.

From the panoramic terrace, start a steep descent on the Z▲ trail. Cross the asphalt road several times, then reach a lower, flat section, where you cross the Libegő again and run past the Tündérhegy quarry.

At the corner after the quarry, turn left at the barrier and descend further on the stairs to reach the rocky lookout above the Tündér rock, at the T-junction turn right, then run lower left to circle around the Tündér rock. At the house, turn right following the fence and run down to the asphalt of Zugligeti street, on which you will return to the Libegő lower station after a few hundred meters.
