The Malom Kör, as an individually completable “instant” circular route, invites participants to the Börzsöny on a shorter (20 km) and a longer (30 km) distance. The tours can be completed by running or walking, and passage through the control points can be verified by scanning QR codes. The tour is named after the Malom-völgyi stream flowing along the route. The start and finish point of the tour can be found in picturesque Zebegény, at the Monarchia Rétesház. When planning the routes carefully, the organizers aimed for visitors to encounter a fairytale-like view and varied, exciting terrain. The route passes through a nature protection area, so it is forbidden to leave the designated hiking trails. It is worth checking the hunting dates before departure on the IpolyErdő website.

    Organizer:

    Technical information:

    • A smartphone and mobile internet subscription are required to complete the route.
    • Multiple participants can start with one phone; after scanning the QR code on the mobile platform, additional finishers (based on the code number received at registration) can be added. The recorded timestamp of the checkpoint touch will be the same for all participants in this case.
    • In the “My Routes” menu, at the current registration data, after pressing the “start” button, the tour data, elapsed time, and number of QR code checkpoints visited are displayed on the phone.
    • The codes placed along the route are automatically scanned by the page after pressing the “QR code” icon (holding the phone’s camera over the code). It is important to permit browser access to the camera in the phone’s settings/apps menu.
    • Sometimes mobile internet is not available at the QR code locations; still scan the code and continue. The app remembers it and if internet is available later, pressing the “Offline update button” records the successful checkpoint. It is very important that after scanning the QR code, do not refresh the webpage because then the temporary file showing the touch will be deleted. If you have problems, feel free to call the organizers at +36 20 264 1721.

    Completion process:

    • On the mobile platform linked to the Malomkör website, there is a built-in QR code reader, so no separate QR code reader app is needed to be pre-installed on the device. The checkpoints must be touched in the given order, and the designated route must be followed. Arriving after the time limit or missing points will result in “dropped out” or “over time limit” appearing next to the name in the results table.
    • If you registered for running but miss the running time limit for any reason, yet arrive within the given hiking time limit for the distance, you may choose either to be an unsuccessful runner (in which case you can try two more times) or a successful hiker, receive the medal and strudel, and be listed as a hiker in the results.
    • After successfully finishing, you will receive a 4-digit code by email that opens one of the “honor box” type medal holders built into the Malomkör tourist post.

    Detailed description of the route:

After scanning the start QR code on the route sign in front of the Rétes Ház, head along Kossuth Lajos street towards the village center, then turn left onto Szőnyi Street at Mókus Pub (300 m). Continue, then after 20 m turn left towards the Trianon memorial, and walk uphill along the S↺ marking on the cobblestone pavement. After 600 m, crossing the Trianon memorial, continue right on the S↺ marking. After leaving Kós Károly lookout, at the crossroads, continue right then left on the well-followed S↺ marking. Be cautious because after 900 meters the well-marked path leads left and uphill. After 250 meters, turn onto the S● marking straight ahead, which will take you to Ernő spring, the 1st checkpoint (2.7 km). The QR code is placed on the back leg of the nearer log bench; a spare code is on the back leg of the log bench at the spring.

Continue downhill on the S↺ marking, then after 700 m turn left to the S+ marking. After 1 km, keep right at the Y junction on the S+ marking. After 300 m, turning right off the route, you find a lookout rest area, the 2nd checkpoint (4.6 km). The QR code is placed inside the wooden house on the upper side of the roof truss; the spare code is on the right side of the cabin outside, also on the inner side of the roof truss.

Return to the S+ marking, continue uphill, then after 1.8 km turn left on the S marking towards Hegyes Peak. Be careful on the steep, rocky path! After 900 m, leaving the radio tower, keep left on the clearing following the K marking, and shortly arrive at the Julianus Lookout. If you have time, go up and admire the stunning view! From the top you can see not only the winding Danube but also the inner Börzsöny.

Leaving the lookout behind, continue along the K marking towards Kövesmező. About 2.2 km later, the K marking crosses an asphalt road, follows along the side, crosses again after 800 m, and gently turns right straight towards Csapás meadows. After the clearing, pass Déchy-Mór resting place, then continue downhill along the K marking in the forest. After 1 km, at the Y junction, keep right, then after 600 m continue straight at the crossroad. Then the K marking turns left and leads to Törökmező, the 3rd checkpoint (14.1 km). The QR code is on the backside of the route sign in front of the tourist house; the spare code is attached to the back post of the Ipoly Erdő Zrt. information board titled “Natural values of the Börzsöny mountain range.”

Going around the tourist house on the right, continue on the Z◼ marking, then after 200 m turn right on the Z marking. After about 500 m, slightly turn left on the clearing onto a less worn narrow path. Soon you reach an asphalt road; continue left, then after 250 m turn right off the road. Crossing the field, enter the forest, where again an asphalt road (Kóspallagi road) crosses the Z marking. Look around, cross it and continue into the forest. After exiting (1 km) at the Y junction, keep right on the Z marking, then after 200 m gently turn left on the Z+ marking, then straight on the worn path through the dry trees meadow to arrive at the 4th checkpoint (17.8 km). The QR code is on the back of the tourist route sign; the spare code is placed on a red concrete post 500 m along the route towards Kóspallag on the right.

From here turn left and head towards Kóspallag on the S marking. After 600 m, at the Y junction, turn right into the forest, then upon exiting the forest continue straight along the forest edge. Entering Kóspallag on the S marking, you arrive at the ABC store at the 5th checkpoint (21.3 km) on Váci street. The QR code is placed on the back of the tourist route sign in front of the grocery store; the spare code is attached to the back post of the Ipoly Erdő Zrt. information board titled “Excursion from Kóspallag to Csóványos.”

Turn left here onto the K marking and continue along Kossuth street. After 600 m, at the end of the village, at the bus stop, turn right onto the dirt road. Passing the football field on the right, enter the forest. After 500 m reach a gravel road, turn left and walk 500 m downhill to the asphalt road. Look around, cross it and continue uphill into the forest. After 2 km, when leaving the clearing, turn right and continue along the forest edge towards the hunting lookout. Turn left here and continue straight along the forest edge, then straight across the meadow to the opposite forest towards Törökmező. After 2 km, before Törökmező, turn right onto the Z marking. Following this marking (1 km), cross the Malomvölgyi stream, then follow the winding path until you reach the Malom valley. Here, turn right onto the worn grassy path and follow the forest edge. After entering the forest (1 km), cross the Malomvölgyi stream again and continue until you reach (2 km) Zebegény. On the Z marking, walk along Ady Endre street back to Rétesház. Scanning the well-known finish QR code on the route sign confirms completion of the 32.8 km distance. Congratulations!
