Malom Kör, as an individually completable “instant” circular route, invites participants to the Börzsöny on a shorter (20 km) and a longer (30 km) distance. The routes can be completed running or walking, with passage at checkpoints verified by scanning QR codes. The route is named after the Malom-völgyi stream flowing along the path. The start and finish of the route are located in the picturesque village of Zebegény, at the Monarchia Rétesház. During the careful planning of the routes, the organizers aimed for visitors to encounter a fairy-tale landscape with varied and exciting terrain. The route passes through a nature conservation area, so leaving the marked hiking trails is forbidden. It is advisable to check hunting schedules before departure on the IpolyErdő website.

    Time limits:

    • Running: 4.5 hours
    • Hiking: 9 hours

    Checkpoints:

    • Start, finish: Zebegény, Rétesház
    • 1st CP: Törökmező tourist house
    • 2nd CP: Lookout rest spot

      • performance data browsable in the results list (Results)

    Organizer:

    Technical information:

    • Smartphone and mobile internet subscription are required to complete the route.
    • Multiple participants can register with one phone; after scanning the QR code on the mobile interface, additional finishers (based on a code number received at registration) can be added. The timestamp for the checkpoint is the same for all participants in this case.
    • In the “My Routes” menu, at current registration data, after pressing the “start” button, the tour data, elapsed time, and the number of QR-code checkpoints will appear on the phone.
    • The posted codes are automatically scanned by pressing the “QR code” icon (holding the phone camera over the code). It is important to allow browser access to the camera in phone settings/apps.
    • Mobile internet connection may not be available at some QR code stations; in this case, scan the code anyway and continue. The app memorizes this and if internet access becomes available, pressing the “Offline refresh button” records the checkpoint. It is very important not to refresh the webpage after scanning the QR code, as the temporary file indicating the checkpoint will be deleted. If you have problems, call the organizers at +36-20-264-1721.

    Completion procedure:

    • The QR code reader is built into the mobile interface of the Malomkör website, so no separate QR code reading app needs to be installed. Points must be touched in the given order, and the designated route followed. Late arrivals and skipped points will be marked as “quit” or “outside time limit” beside the name in the results table.
    • Those who registered as runners but miss the running time limit for any reason, but finish within the hiking time limit, can choose either to be classified as unsuccessful runners (in which case they can try two more times) or successful hikers; in the latter case, they receive the medal and strudel, and will be listed as hikers in the results.
    • After successful finish, you will receive a 4-digit code by email to open one of the “honor system” medal holders built into the Malomkör tourist column.

    Itinerary:

    • From the start, follow the Z sign to the fork before Törökmező
    • Take the K trail passing through Törökmező and also the Julianus Lookout to the saddle of Szent Mihály Hill
    • Turn right onto the S+ trail and descend into the border of Zebegény
    • On the S● and then the S↺ trail, return to Kossuth Lajos Street, then take the last meters on the Z trail.

    Detailed description of the route:

After scanning the start QR code on the road sign in front of the Rétes House, head east on Kossuth Lajos Street out of the village on the Z trail. Continue straight for 150 m, then continue on Ady Endre Street until you exit the village (1.2 km). Following the gravel road, enter the forest, then after 1.1 km, cross over the Malom stream.

After leaving the forest, follow the worn grassy path in the Malom valley, then cross the stream again after 1.9 km. Continue on the beaten path and after about 100 m be watchful as the Z trail turns left onto a narrower less worn track. After passing through a 300 m section with nettles, cross the stream again. After 1 km, turn right at the intersection onto the K trail. Cross the wooden bridge, turn left, and ascend to the Törökmező tourist house (1st checkpoint (6.2 km)). The QR code is located on the back of the road sign in front of the tourist house; the backup code is on the rear support post of the Ipoly Erdő Zrt. information board titled "Natural values of the Börzsöny Mountains".

Continue on the K trail towards Csapás-meadows (Julianus Lookout). Upon reaching the meadow (3.8 km), cross the asphalt road and continue right parallel with it. After 800 meters, the path turns right and crosses the asphalt road again; here turn left and enter the forest. After 500 m leaving the forest, turn right and then after 15 m, turn left onto the K trail back into the forest. After exiting the forest again (500 m), turn right and then after 100 m at the Y junction, go left ascending towards Hegyes Peak.

You will soon reach the Julianus Lookout; if you have time, go up and enjoy the stunning views! From the top, there is an unparalleled panorama not only of the Danube but also the inner Börzsöny! Leaving the lookout behind, continue on the K trail towards the saddle of Szent Mihály Hill, and after 700 m go straight and switch to the S trail, then turn right after 400 m onto the S+ trail. Be cautious on the steep rocky path! The S+ trail after 1 km turns right downhill and about 1 km later leaves the main path to the left, where you find a lookout resting spot and the 2nd checkpoint (15.7 km). The QR code is placed on the inner part of the roof beam of the cabin; the backup code is on the right side of the cabin on the outer structure, also on the inside of the roof beam.

Return to the S+ trail and continue downhill. After 1.3 km, turn right on the S● trail and proceed through the Bodzás Valley until you reach the Ernő spring (3rd checkpoint (17.7 km)). The QR code is located on the rear leg of the closer log table; the backup code is on the rear leg of the log table at the spring.

Return to the S● trail and continue uphill on the serpentine path, then after 600 m cross straight on to the S↺ trail crossing a path. After 1.3 km, the trail turns right and then left towards the Kós Károly Lookout. Continue on the S↺ trail. A cobblestone road leads down to Zebegény on the left side of the Trianon Memorial. At the end of the cobblestone road, continue straight for 20 m, then at the Mókus pub turn right onto Kossuth Lajos Street, following the Z trail, and after 300 m arrive at Rétesház on the left side of the road.

By scanning the finish QR code on the known road sign, you successfully complete the 20.4 km distance. Congratulations!
