On the go in hiking boots
Hochfelln, Rauschberg and the Winklmoosalm are the favorite destinations of ambitious hikers. However, the Chiemgau mountain world is also suitable for families and leisure hikers, as many mountain railways make the ascent to lofty heights easier. There are places to stop and eat with the numerous alpine pastures and mountain inns – and there is a wonderful view on top of that.
Above all, the holiday resorts in the Chiemgau Alps with their extensive network of trails and tour options establish themselves as destinations for hiking enthusiasts. From Reit im Winkl, we can start to Dürrnbachhorn, to the Taubensee, to the Wilden Kaiser, or to the Winklmoosalm. In Inzell, one can either set off for a summit assault on the Hochstaufen, Zwiesel, or Gamsknogel. Ruhpolding offers hiking, walking, and mountain trails for every taste and every requirement. The Rauschberg is reachable for everyone thanks to its mountain railway.
Biker paradise Chiemgau
The touring possibilities for mountain bikers are almost inexhaustible between the Chiemgau Alps, Chiemsee, and Salzach. But families and leisure cyclists also find an appealing terrain here: many bike paths follow the natural course of the water and therefore have no significant inclines.
Particularly popular is the Chiemsee circular route. The route around the „Bavarian Sea” is one of the most beautiful bike tours in southern Germany. In summer, be sure to bring swimwear! Those who do not want to cycle the approximately 50 km in one go can shorten the tour and cover a section by the Chiemsee shipping service or the Chiemsee ring line, the bike and hiking bus with bike trailer.
The Achental cycle path leads us to the Tyrolean border. On low-traffic roads and moderate inclines, the circular tour runs along many sights such as the town of Raiten with its pilgrimage church and the Marquartstein castle.
Nature and Excursion Destinations in the Chiemgau

In many nature and landscape conservation areas, rare animal and plant species are native. The Chiemsee and its surroundings are one of the most species-rich bird areas in Germany. Observation platforms and towers provide a good overview without disturbing the fauna and flora.
Especially in the high and low moors there are many wetlands where breeding birds nest and orchids can be found. Many hiking trails and educational paths run through the moor areas, so hikers can go on discovery tours here.
Not only the two "big ones", Chiemsee and Waginger See, characterize Chiemgau as a region of water landscapes. Smaller forest, moor, and mountain lakes are also such pearls and are worth a visit on foot or by bike.
The Frauen- and Herreninsel islands in the Chiemsee are much more popular and attract visitors of the opposite sex as well. Easily accessible by excursion boat, the Fraueninsel offers a well-known motif: the monastery, the church with its bell tower, the gatehouse, and the home gardens of the fishing village. The Herreninsel is dominated by the Herrenchiemsee Palace with its water features and a museum about Ludwig II. In summer, a concert in this special setting is certainly a very special holiday experience…
Chiemgau in winter
In the cold season, the Chiemgau scores with all variations of the snow experience – with or without boards under your feet: winter hiking, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding as well as tobogganing keep you fit and are fun – a magically snow-covered winter landscape is included for free in the Chiemgau. Or how about a guided ski tour, the king discipline among winter sports…?
The Chiemgau winter sports and vacation region also has a lot to offer holidaymakers and winter sports enthusiasts in ...
And otherwise?

Sailing and swimming at Lake Chiemsee – that probably appeals to everyone. But the Chiemgau region has even more to offer. Every year, the "Chiemsee Reggae Summer" festival takes place here, attracting thousands of reggae fans to Übersee. Culture enthusiasts can visit the Seeon Monastery or attend one of the traditional costume parades or horse rides.
For relaxation, a visit to a spa is recommended, such as Vita Alpina in Ruhpolding. The Chiemgau offers something for every taste, and accommodations range from five-star wellness hotels to cozy, rustic farms.
