The Chiemsee circular route is 53 km long and leads as a combined cyclist and pedestrian path close to the shore around Chiemsee. Special consideration for pedestrians is required here!
It is rightly one of the most beautiful hiking and cycling trails in Bavaria, if not Germany, and highly recommended for leisure cyclists. The cycling route overcomes only a few slight ascents with 221 metres of elevation and is therefore ideal for leisure and family cyclists. Many sections close to the Chiemsee shore invite you to pause, swim and relax.
Why the Chiemsee circular route is worth it:
- The route leads on dirt roads, paved cycle paths and secondary roads and can be ridden with common touring bikes. The Chiemsee circular route is a combined cyclist and pedestrian path, so special consideration is required.
- It passes numerous bathing spots and offers the possibility to visit the Herreninsel with the famous Herrenchiemsee palace as well as the Fraueninsel at several ferry landings.
- The route passes nine towns with numerous places to eat and is signposted well throughout in both directions.
- The impressive lake and Alpine panorama accompanies cyclists on the circular route.
- For normal to sporty cyclists and e-bikers we recommend the faster Chiemsee cycle path.
Our tip: ideal combinations with the Chiemsee ring line
- The Chiemsee ring line is a bus line service that transports cyclists and their bicycles around Chiemsee from the end of May to mid-October.
- The Chiemsee circuit is a route particularly busy in summer, so we recommend using the time in spring and autumn. Have you already tried our other cycling tours by water such as the 16-lake circuit, which also passes numerous bathing spots around the Eggstätt-Hemhof lakes?

Safety information
- Always check the lighting system, brakes, tires and reflectors on your bike before starting!
- Wear bright, reflective clothing in low visibility (dusk, darkness, fog, etc.). Alternatively: vest or ankle bands with reflective strips.
- Especially in autumn and winter, leaves lying on the ground can conceal possible unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path.
- Attach tall bicycle flags to your children's bicycles so even the smallest riders are clearly visible in traffic.
- Since the path is partly used by cyclists and walkers, it should be shared considerately!
- Along the Chiemsee circular route and Chiemsee cycle path there are emergency meeting points set up.
-
Taking bicycles on boats is not possible on all vessels and only to a limited extent. Therefore, the Chiemsee boat service does not guarantee bike transport. Riding bicycles on the islands is not allowed.

Roadbook
The Chiemsee circular route is signposted in both directions; cyclists can start from any location. Here we describe the route starting from Bernau/Felden clockwise:
- At the Strandbad Felden (Sights: Chiemsee boat trip to Herren- and Fraueninsel, Irschener Winkel observation tower) head north towards Prien, passing Strandbad Schöllkopf, Schramlbad and the Prien climbing forest.
- From Prien-Stock (Sights: Prienavera adventure pool, Local history museum, Chiemsee railway, Chiemsee boat trip to Herren- and Fraueninsel) it goes to Osternach and continues on narrow, natural walking paths towards Rimsting (beach facility with environmental education hut at the Prien river mouth). At Hochstätt you have a wonderful view of Chiemsee with the Alpine range.
- Past Keilbacher Bay and Mühlner Corner you reach Gstadt (sights: Nature observation tower at Ganszipfel, Chiemsee boat trip to Herren- and Fraueninsel, Hofanger Park). Alternatively, from the Mühlner harbor you can turn right onto the elevated path northwards to Peace Square and the Gstadt viewpoint: here you have one of the most beautiful views of Chiemsee!
- Next is Seebruck (sights: Spa park with observation tower, Roman museum, Chiemsee boat trip to Herren- and Fraueninsel). A detour to the Seeoner Lakes nature reserve with the monastery complex is worthwhile.
- With the Alpine range in view, head south towards Chieming (sights: barrier-free observation platform, Chiemsee boat trip to Herren- and Fraueninsel) and continue towards Grabenstätt.
- Shortly before Hirschau turn right into Hirschau Bay. At the local observation tower enjoy a magnificent view of the Achen delta with its birdlife. Continue on the dam path towards Übersee. At the Achen bridge, via the forest path, you reach the community Übersee-Feldwies (sights: traditional inn Feldwies, Exter artist house). Here a detour to the Strandbad Übersee (sights: Chiemsee boat trip to Herren- and Fraueninsel) is possible.
-
From Übersee-Feldwies continue along the A8 to Bernau.
Alternative route away from the motorway: Over Westerbuchberg you ride at the edge of the rare raised bog landscape of the Kendlmühlfilze (sights: Bavarian Moor & Peat Museum), reach Bernau and return to the starting point Felden.
