Terantie cycling trip from Lentiira to Kajaani 149 km, Kainuu

Travel from the clear headwaters of Lentiira through Kuhmo, Sotkamo, and Vuokatti to Kajaani along the old tar transport route scenery.
Tar had a very important role in Kainuu in the past. Tar was transported by boats along rivers and lakes to Oulu's Teravhovi, from where it was sold to countries including England, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The current Terantie tourist route follows the Oulujoki water system and this cycling route follows the beautiful Sotkamo water route.
The Terantie cycling route is recommended to be ridden in three days. On each stage, there is diverse accommodation available. Stages: Lentiira - Kuhmo 42 km / Kuhmo - Vuokatti 69 km / Vuokatti - Kajaani 37 km
The route sometimes passes through wilderness stretches but also offers many interesting stopping points. In Kuhmo, you first encounter Lentua and Lentuankoski, then Kalevankangas attractions and the town center with Pajakkakoski. On the way to Sotkamo, stop at the Tervassalmi museum bridge. In Sotkamo town center, you can enjoy cafés and services as well as Hiukka beach. Vuokatti is full of attractions. On the way to Kajaani, stop at the Naapurinvaaran scenery. In Kajaani, you can finish the trip at Rauniolinna and Tervakanava.

Safety information
The route is asphalted. There are separate pedestrian and cycling paths in urban areas; otherwise, the route mainly follows the road shoulders. There is some heavy traffic on main road sections.
The route is not signposted, so follow car traffic signs. In Sotkamo-Vuokatti and Kajaani urban areas, there is also signage for pedestrians and cyclists.
Tips and suggestions
Along the route, you can also access the actual Terareitti waters by renting, for example, a SUP board or a canoe.

Route: Lentiira - Kuhmo - Sotkamo - Vuokatti - Naapurinvaara - Kuluntalahti - Kajaani
From Lentiira to Kuhmo, take Lentiirantie (912). After the Tönölänsalmi bridge, Kalevankangas area is on the left, featuring sights and services. From Lentiirantie, turn to Koulukatu in the town center.
From Kuhmo towards Sotkamo, initially drive on Kainuuntie, which changes to Sotkamontie (76) at the roundabout. Continue towards Sotkamo, where the road name changes to Kuhmontie at the municipal border and further changes to Kainuuntie in the center.
In Vuokatti, turn right onto Kuikkalammentie (8991) and then left to Pohjavaarantie (8990), which leads north of the water system towards Kajaani. In Kajaani, the road name changes to Vuokatintie. In Kuluntalahti, before the railway bridge, turn left onto Takkarannantie, leading to the town center. Drive on Kuurnantie under Highway 5 to the pedestrian path and across the river, then turn onto Onnelantie and follow the riverbank further towards the center.

There is no public transport to Lentiira. However, Kuhmo and Sotkamo-Vuokatti are well accessible by bus, and Kajaani by train, bus, and flight.
