Monument of the Church of the Axe People, Lentiira Kuhmo
The monument of the Church of Axe people is located in the beautiful village of Lentiira. The monument is an important part of the local history.
The Church of the Axe People was built using an axe in 1812. It burnt down in the Winter War in 1940. You can still see the foundations of the destroyed church, made of natural stones, with a monument from 1962 in the middle. The church could hold 300 people.
At the corner of the church site one can still see a small wooden morgue, built in 1864 for winter use in particular, as it was difficult to dig graves in the frozen ground. You are kindly asked to sign your name in the Visitors´ Book.
Lentiira´s Old Graveyard is located 300 metres from the monument. It was started in the end of the 18th century and has been in official use since 1812.

Directions
To reach Monument of the Church of the Axe People take the Kuhmo-Suomussalmi road (No.912) and drive 43km north towards the Lentiira village. You should turn to left at the Käntinsalmentie crossroads and drive 1,5km. Then turn to left again to Sutelantie and follow the signposts to the monument.
