At the top of Vuokatinvaara, hidden by frosty trees, sheltered by patinated log walls, there is an immediate atmosphere that cannot be described, it must be experienced.
The small, atmospheric Vaaran Tupa hut has been serving travelers ever since its completion in 1937. At first, the hut offered shelter to who came hiking or skiing, and already in 1966 the first cafe was established there. Another important function of the hut has been to serve as a fire warden’s cabin. Next to it rises the old fire warden’s tower. The best-known fire warden in the tower is the author Veikko Huovinen. He started his literary production while watching for possible wildfires. During the war, the hut served as a base for the air surveillance next to tower. The hut operated from 1989 until the spring of 2022 as the slope restaurant Ripa's Kuppila.
The Vaaran Tupa cafe with its scenic terrace is open both in the winter and summer seasons.
In winter, it serves skiers, snowshoeers and others who come to the top of the hill. In the summer, the most important hiking and mountain biking routes pass by the cafe.
