The stage from Mužla to Esztergom begins in the gentle agricultural landscape of southern Slovakia, where vineyards and open fields guide the walker toward Obid, a village shaped by centuries of farming on the fertile Danube terrace. From here, the route continues toward Štúrovo‑Železničný rad, where the first hints of urban life appear, and the distant silhouette of the Esztergom Basilica rises across the river like a beacon. Entering Štúrovo, the trail winds through lively streets lined with markets, cafés, and the long history of this border town facing its Hungarian twin city. The final stretch crosses the iconic Mária Valéria Bridge, offering sweeping views of the Danube and the monumental basilica perched on its hill. Arriving in Esztergom

    Roadbook

Leaving Mužla, the trail heads out across open fields toward the village of Obid. Here, a small asphalt road leads to the outskirts of Štúrovo, the twin city of Esztergom. Štúrovo, the town museum, the Vadaš thermal bath, and a monument to King Jan Sobieski stand near the river crossing.

Across the Danube lies Esztergom. The castle stands on the hill above the river, together with the Basilica, whose dome dominates the skyline. Within the former castle complex are the Castle Museum, the Christian Museum, and the remains of the Ottoman Mosque. The Mill Bastion and sections of the defensive walls stand along the slope. In the town below are the Danube Museum and the synagogue. The stage ends at Esztergom, one of the historic centres of the Hungarian kingdom.

    Public transport

Direct buses operated by Arriva Slovensko depart from Štúrovo, Station (žel.st.), and arrive at Mužla (Jednota) and Óbid  (Jednota)

Štúrovo, is best reached by train via the main line connecting Bratislava and Budapest, offering reliable, scenic, and frequent services. It is also accessible by car or regional buses, and acts as a border crossing from Esztergom, Hungary, across the Danube River.
Getting from Štúrovo (SK) to Esztergom (HU) is very easy, as the towns are directly connected by the Mária Valéria Bridge across the Danube, allowing for walking, driving, or taking a local bus

The fastest and most convenient way to get from Budapest to Esztergom is by train from Budapest-Nyugati station, with direct services departing every 30 minutes. The journey takes approximately one hour. Other options include buses from Újpest-Városkapu or a scenic drive/boat ride along the Danube Bend.
For international travellers, flying into Vienna (VIE), Bratislava (BTS) or Budapest (BUD) and taking a train is often the most direct route.
