The current synagogue building was inaugurated in 1888, reflecting the architectural confidence of a community integrated into urban life. That trajectory was violently interrupted during the Holocaust. Jewish shops were forced to close on 28 April 1944; a ghetto was established on 11 May; and by June, deportations had begun. On 16 June 1944, members of the Esztergom Jewish community were deported to Auschwitz. In January 1945, two forced labor units composed largely of Esztergom Jews were executed near Ágfalva at the Austrian border.
After the Second World War, the synagogue ceased functioning as a religious space. In 2006, the municipality acquired the building and transformed it into the House of Culture. Today, it stands as both an architectural landmark and a silent witness to a community whose roots in Esztergom stretched back centuries.
