The Sobieski Monument in Víziváros (Elizabeth Park) commemorates the recapture of Esztergom and the Battle of Párkány in 1683, honoring King John III Sobieski of Poland.
The monument was erected to mark the 250th anniversary of Esztergom’s liberation from Ottoman rule. At its center is a circular bronze relief featuring a life-size portrait of King John III Sobieski, with a diameter of 50 cm. Originally, a stone eagle crowned the monument, symbolizing Polish sovereignty, but it later broke off and disappeared. In 1994, Hungarian sculptor János Nagy, based in Slovakia, created a one-metre-high bronze eagle to replace it. The total height of the monument is approximately three metres.

The memorial stands in Víziváros (Watertown), the historic riverside district named for its location along the Kis-Duna (Small Danube) and Nagy-Duna (Great Danube). The area preserves visible traces of its fortified past, including walls, bastions, and Ottoman rondellas. Nearby, a stone tablet with Ottoman Turkish inscription commemorates Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent’s siege of 1543—a reminder that history along the Danube rarely moves in straight lines.

Within the winding streets of Víziváros, visitors encounter layers of cultural history: remnants of Turkish mosques and baths; Baroque and Classicist buildings; and the Primate’s Palace (1880–82), designed by József Lippert. The palace houses the Keresztény Múzeum, founded by Archbishop János Simor, with an important collection of medieval Hungarian panel paintings, Gothic altars, and European artworks from the 13th to 18th centuries.

Also in the district is the Balassa Bálint Museum, a Baroque building constructed on medieval foundations that once served as the first town hall of Esztergom County after the Ottoman period. The Jesuit parish church (1728–1738) and the Franciscan church further enrich the Baroque architectural character of the neighborhood.

Together, the monument and its surroundings form a compact historical landscape where Ottoman, Habsburg, Polish, and Hungarian narratives intersect along the Danube.
