The Mátrabérc is one of Hungary's toughest endurance hikes, as it leads along the continuously undulating main ridge of the Mátra. The 55 km distance is accompanied by 2700 m of elevation gain and a time limit of 13 hours, balanced by a constantly changing, uniquely exciting natural environment.

The Mátrabérc endurance hike has been organized by the Hanák Kolos Hiking Association since 1987. The route runs along the Mátra from Sirok-Kőkútpuszta through Kékestető and Mátraszentimre to Szurdokpüspöki, linking together all important points along the main ridge.

The challenging rhythm of continuous ascent and descent lasts from early morning until early evening, offering little chance to rest – therefore, this endurance hike is only recommended for the fittest. The distance can be divided into four ridge sections: the first is the climb from Kőkútpuszta to Kékes, crossing numerous peaks, and is the hardest terrain of the hike. This is followed by the section from Kékestető to Galyatető, where a long descent is followed by an increasingly steep climb. After leaving Galyatető, the hike runs around the villages of Upper Mátra on narrow and wide mountain ridges, and after Ágasvár, one of the most beautiful and easiest sections of the Mátrabérc leads through the valley of the Csörgő stream to the last, relentless climb. The fourth section runs along the Muzsla ridge, which must first be ascended, but then the 55 km walk can be finished over relatively easy terrain.
