GTA stages: Aosta Valley - Ceresole Reale
This section of the GTA (Grande Traversata delli Alpi, about 65 stages in total) is the continuation of the stages Forno - Sant'Antonio and Sant'Antonio (Alagna) - Aosta Valley. The daily stages are generally significantly longer and technically more demanding than on the northeastern stages of the GTA. This section is not recommended for beginners. However, those who are not deterred by 8 hours of hiking time and are surefooted on mountain trails will be rewarded with lonely mountain scenery and very hospitable people.
The entire area has been experiencing a population decline for 100 years, which is still ongoing. What is bad for the residents is a pleasure for hikers and holidaymakers. Mass tourism and traffic noise are foreign words here. In every guesthouse, hospitality is highly valued and the food leaves nothing to be desired.
Special alpine equipment is not required. Some places require sure footing, some sections good orientation. Having a GPS device or smartphone with offline maps is recommended.
You usually have to overcome 1000 - 1400 meters of altitude daily. Many stages are long (about 8 hours). The main hiking season is from late June to early September.

A smartphone with offline maps (OpenStreetMap, apps available in the respective app store) is a good help. In airplane mode, the smartphone easily lasts two days. A rain cover for the phone is mandatory. Especially in bad weather, GPS help is needed.
Accommodations must definitely be booked in advance, at the latest the day before, otherwise you may quickly face a full accommodation and have to continue hiking. Also, small accommodations need to prepare dinner. Timely cancellation is therefore a matter of course.

Roadbook
GTA - Quincinetto - Scalaro (Le Capanne)
A beautiful ascent through vineyards, forest, and meadows on old paths.
A long route over meadows on the Colle di Pian Spergiurati with beautiful views and further into the Chuisella Valley with its old villages.
The paths are sometimes indistinctly marked and the signs hide in the grass. Especially the descent over pastures into the Chuisella Valley is partly difficult to find.
This long, lonely route over the Bocchetta delle Oche (2415m) leads across wide alpine pastures from the Chiusella Valley to the Soana Valley.
GTA - Piamprato to Ronco Canavese
A short route that can be used as a rest day. Then it is worthwhile despite longer sections on roads.
Via Alpina (GTA): Ronco Canavese to Talosio
This transition from the Val Soana to the Valle Orco first leads through a beautiful forest, then over alpine meadows. The short detour to Cima Rosta offers distant views.
GTA - Talosio to San Lorenzo di Piantonetto
This long route leads over pastures past the Eugio reservoir.
The route consists of two beautiful parts, the ascent and panoramic path to the Kapella Sant Anna as well as the valley path from Fe to Noasca. The descent in between is very special.
GTA - Noasca to Ceresole Reale
On good paths, the stage leads past old, mostly ruined hamlets up to scenic alpine pastures and down again to the tourist town of Ceresole Reale by Lago di Ceresole.

Equipment
The route requires mountain boots and typical hut gear. Rain jacket and pants (or equivalent) are a matter of course, especially since long routes mostly cannot be interrupted in bad weather. In June and until early July, snowfields must still sometimes be expected. Trekking poles are certainly no mistake there. In summer, a sun hat must not be missing, as well as a hydration system or water bottle.
One of the two hiking books on the GTA is mandatory reading, also because of the extensive accommodation directories (scan and save on your smartphone; that saves weight).
In most accommodations, you can pay by card. However, since there are no ATMs on the route, you still need to carry enough cash.
