Gera is also known as the gateway to the Vogtland. The governors built one of their seats of power here in the 12th century. Some important buildings have been preserved from the era of their descendants, the Reuss princely house. Gera, with its historic district of Untermhaus, has a unique promenade full of small and large restaurants.

The birthplace of the famous painter and graphic artist Otto Dix (1891-1969) houses one of the most important Dix collections with works from all creative periods - from the impressionistic beginnings to the last self-portrait.

Architecture in Vogtland

Bridge building art of superlatives

It was the middle of the 19th century when the Saxon-Bavarian Railway Company decided to build a new railway line between Leipzig and Nuremberg. The challenge was to develop a structure that could overcome the deep valley of the Göltzsch. Despite a large competition for the project, no one took the statics into account, so that Professor Johann Andreas Schubert, born in Wernesgrün, finally submitted his own design after taking into account excellent proposals - a brick bridge 78 meters high and more than half a kilometer long.

It took many months before the Saxon-Bavarian Railway Company could lay the foundation stone for a bridge construction project that had never existed in this form before. Due to unexpected complications during construction of the pillars, the initially planned even arches were supplemented by two large arches in the middle at the suggestion of senior construction manager Wilke.

During peak times, over 1,700 workers were working on the construction site every month, around 23,000 trees were felled for scaffolding and up to 150,000 bricks were fired, brought to the construction site and laid in place every day. With hard manual labor, it was possible to build both the Göltzschtal Bridge and its "little sister", the Elstertal Bridge near Plauen, in the same time between 1846 and 1851. Today, the approximately 26 million bricks used shine as the most impressive structure in the entire Vogtland. After restoration in 1950, the Elstertal Bridge also appears in its original splendor again.

Industrial culture & Creative Industries

The cultural monument "Weisbachsches Haus" (Weisbach House) in Plauen is an important manufacturing building in Saxony's industrial development and an important part of the city's industrial heritage. Here, at the foot of the historic old town, the Elsteraue creative quarter is currently being built with the "Factory of Threads" as a new experience location for the topic of Plauen lace. Together with the weavers' houses and the Hempelsche factory, you can already get to know Plauen's rich industrial history here. Plauen also offers a large number of Wilhelminian and Art Nouveau houses with magnificent facades.

Art Nouveau

Along with metropolises such as Barcelona, Brussels or Riga, Greiz is also part of the international community of cities with Art Nouveau styles. The fact that there are so many of these to discover in Greiz may be surprising at first glance. In the former capital of the Principality of Reuss Ä.L., which experienced a boom in its textile industry in the 19th century, there were a number of open-minded builders and architects who adopted the contemporary style. A stroll through the historic city center promises a real architectural experience. You can also be enchanted by the charm of magnificent Wilhelminian-era villas on a tour of Greiz's new town.

Villa and Bauhaus Tour in Gera

The villa tour shows the architectural diversity of the numerous factory owners' villas that have been preserved from the 19th to the 20th century. Gera is the city with the most architectural monuments from the Bauhaus era in Thuringia. Manufacturers, but also wealthy citizens of the city, liked the new architecture and had houses and factories built for them. Thilo Schoder, a master student of Henry van de Velde, is considered the most consistent representative of the New Building movement in Thuringia. The Bauhaus tour - whether on foot or by bus - makes the flair of the 1920s tangible.

Half-timbered houses

Historic half-timbered and timber-framed houses characterize the rural flair and can also be found in the Vogtland. You can see well-preserved half-timbered and timber-framed houses on a village walk in the Thuringian Vogtland, for example in Langenwetzendorf, Weckersdorf or Korbußen.

In the Saxon part of the region you will find particularly well-preserved buildings in the Upper Vogtland, such as in Raun, the Vogtland Open Air Museum Landwüst and Eubabrunn, but also in Oberlauterbach and Plauen.
