The best-known relic from the Reeves of Gera period is the keep at Osterstein Castle on Hainberg Hill above the district of Untermhaus in Gera; the keep can be seen from far away.

It forms the remains of the medieval castle complex and was part of the residential castle used by the Reuss Younger Line princes at a later date; it was destroyed during the Second World War. Only a few service buildings and the castle keep have been preserved today. Thanks to its park-like surroundings and the terrace café, the complex is a popular destination for outings for local Gera people. It is definitely worthwhile walking down the hill to St Mary’s Church. If you cross the bridge over the river Elster, and passing along an avenue, you arrive at the orangery– which now houses the art collections of the city of Gera – and finally reach the magnificent theatre.

Gera liegt an der Autobahn A 4 (Erfurt-Dresden). Reisende aus Richtung Hof nehmen auf der A 9 bereits die Abfahrt Triptis und fahren über die B 2 nach Gera. Reisende aus Plauen/Greiz nutzen die direkte Verbindung über die B 92.
