Ab 1800 ließ Fürst Heinrich XIII. Reuss Aelterer Linie (1747–1817) den Park nach englischem Vorbild neu anlegen. Heinrich XIX. Reuss Aelterer Linie (1790–1836) engagierte für umfangreiche Arbeiten den kaiserlich-königlichen Schlosshauptmann Johann Michael Riedl von Leuenburg aus Laxenburg bei Wien. Die nächsten gestalterischen Impulse für den Landschaftsgarten kamen schließlich im Zuge des Eisenbahnbaus vom berühmten Muskauer Gartendirektor Carl Eduard Petzold. Dieser erhielt 1872 den Auftrag, Pläne für den Park und die Bahnmaskierung zu entwickeln. Petzolds Pläne wurden von seinem Schüler Rudolph Reinecken abgewandelt. Ab 1873 prägte Reinecken, der insgesamt 50 Jahre in Greiz wirkte, die Entwicklung des Parks nachhaltig.
Seit 1994 gehört dieses national bedeutsame Denkmalensemble zur Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten.
