The natural landscape of the Spessart
The Spessart or woodpecker forest is characterized by vast oak and beech forests, bordered by rivers and numerous streams and surrounded by meadows. Kinzig, Sinn and Main border the Spessart all around and separate it from the Franconian Plate in the east, the Odenwald in the south and west and the Büdinger Wald and Rhön in the north. While forests grow on the heights of the mountains, it is populated on the slopes and at the foot. The highest peak is the Geiersberg with 586 m in the High Spessart and the main ridge stretches over 75 km from Miltenberg in the south to Schlüchtern in the north.
The Spessart is now strongly influenced by tourism. Those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers come to the low mountain range, which has two nature parks and numerous smaller protected areas, providing an intact natural landscape. Not least the legends and shiver tales attract people to the region. From Snow White to Mother Holle to the Spessart robbers, there are several tales that provide variety in the forests of the Spessart.
On two legs through the Spessart
Especially hikers feel comfortable in the Spessart. On marked hiking trails you will walk through the dense forests and wide meadows with great views of the historic half-timbered towns and to sights such as the moated castle Mespelbrunn, various churches or the graduation house in Bad Orb. The regional theme and circular trails lead along bubbling streams, over gentle hills and to gnarled oaks.
Particularly popular, of course, is the Eselsweg, a long-distance hiking trail that has probably been in use for over 2000 years and leads over the main ridge of the mountains almost without touching the villages. Also the Birkenhainer Straße, a medieval army and trade route between Rhine Franconia and East Franconia, the Maintalhöhenweg or the Franconian Red Wine Hiking Trail on the western edge of the Spessart along the Main Valley are worthwhile. The Spessartbogen stretches over 90 km from Langenselbold to Schlüchtern and is supplemented by the Spessart tracks and Spessart trails. Part of the German Limes hiking trail also runs through the Spessart.
