Matica Srpska is the oldest Serbian literary, cultural, and scientific institution. Founded in 1826, it has played a central role in the development of Serbian literature, scholarship, and national culture.
Matica Srpska was established in 1826 in Budapest by Serbian intellectuals who sought to promote education, literature, and scientific research among the Serbian people. In 1864 the institution relocated to Novi Sad, which at the time was becoming an important cultural center in the region. From this base it significantly influenced Serbian cultural and intellectual life.

One of Matica Srpska’s most important contributions was the publication of Letopis Matice srpske, one of the oldest continuously published literary journals in Europe. The institution also developed major cultural branches, including the Gallery of Matica Srpska and the Matica Srpska Library, which today houses one of the largest collections of books and manuscripts in Serbia.

Through its scholarly work, publications, and cultural initiatives, Matica Srpska became a key institution preserving Serbian language, literature, and national identity. Today it remains an important center for research, publishing, and cultural cooperation, continuing the intellectual traditions that shaped the modern cultural life of Novi Sad and Serbia.
