Garda Trentino

There is a region where the fresh Alpine air meets Mediterranean warmth and the green of the mountains is reflected in the blue of the lake. Here, outdoor experiences are combined with relaxed enjoyment and the Italian way of life goes hand in hand with Alpine tradition. This is the northern shore of Lake Garda: Garda Trentino.

Where the Alps meet the Mediterranean: Garda Trentino

Garda Trentino comprises the narrow northern part of Lake Garda, the Ledro Valley in the west and the area along the Sarca River towards Trento, also known as the Valle dei Laghi, and the Comano Valley. Here the Alps, with their green peaks and impressive viewpoints, meet an atmosphere that is characterized by the Mediterranean lifestyle. Olive groves, vineyards, palm trees and oleanders are simply part of it.

You can therefore expect a very special climate in Garda Trentino: not only thanks to Lake Garda itself, but also the constant winds and numerous days of sunshine, which ensure that it is always pleasantly mild here - even in the middle of the mountains. This makes this region, which is almost reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord, a vacation destination all year round!

Outdoor activities in the Garda Trentino region

Water, sky, earth, rock and sun: Garda Trentino has everything you need for a vacation surrounded by nature - from professional climbers to occasional cyclists. Thanks to the unique microclimate, you can be active outdoors all year round.

Hiking adventures for great emotions

Over 1,000 kilometers of signposted hiking trails are waiting to be discovered by you. You'll find countless short and easy walks with lake views or along the Sarca river, tours to ancient castles, picturesque villages and towns as well as beautifully protected natural areas and the sites of the First World War.

If you are more ambitious, there are also longer and more challenging routes such as the Garda Trek or the Ledro Trek. And even trail runners will not be disappointed in Garda Trentino - with many challenging climbs and trails that reward you with colorful panoramas.

The impressive peaks of Garda Trentino are a real magnet for anyone who wants to spend their vacation actively. They offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and, of course, Lake Garda. On clear, sunny days, the deep blue waters of the lake almost seem to merge with the sky on the horizon! We particularly recommend the Monte Corno, from where you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views. If you're looking for a thrill, grab your climbing harness and helmet and choose from over ten via ferratas - including the famous Ferrata Signora delle Acque.

Where climbing is at home

Garda Trentino is an absolute must for all climbing fans. Over 700 routes of varying degrees of difficulty are waiting for you to try them out. The town of Arco is considered the world capital of sport climbing and regularly hosts top-class international competitions - most notably the Rock Master.

Discover Garda Trentino on two wheels

Garda Trentino is a real paradise for cyclists of all kinds: whether you want to cruise along gravel paths or cycle leisurely along the crystal-clear shores of one of the many lakes, 2,500 kilometers of cycle paths await you here, many of which are even accessible in winter. Mountain bikers can look forward to the trails in the Trail Center Pietramurata, a tour to the summit of Monte Casale or the legendary Tremalzo Pass adventure (Route 779). By the way: you can also explore many routes effortlessly on an e-bike.

Road cyclists will find challenging, varied climbs and ever-changing views. If you prefer to cycle through the countryside at a more relaxed pace, Garda Trentino offers numerous cycle paths and small country roads - ideal for exploring the region at your own pace and discovering its most beautiful sides!

Water fun between wind and waves

From spring to fall, the waters around Garda Trentino are a real Eldorado for anyone who loves water sports. The north of Lake Garda is the windiest region: thanks to the Ora and Pelèr winds, which change daily, the conditions here are perfect for sailors, windsurfers and wingfoilers. SUP, canoeing and kayaking fans can explore the shores of Lake Cavedine and Lake Ledro, where they can discover particularly charming corners. In Lake Ledro and Lake Terlago, you can also get your money's worth with wakeboarding.

If you fancy a special adventure, you can try canyoning in the Valle di Ledro - two streams, the Palvico and the Rio Nero, are ideal for this. On hot summer days, the region's lakes are also ideal for swimming - the perfect way to cool off and then relax on the beach or in the shade of the trees on the meadows. And if you get the fishing bug, you can try your luck in the Sarca river in the Comano area. In short: wherever there's water in Garda Trentino, there's never a dull moment!

Countless adventures for little explorers

In Garda Trentino, families have many opportunities to enjoy exciting and fun experiences in nature: quiet walks with a view of the lake, more challenging hikes in the countryside, family-friendly bike tours and easy rock climbing routes for young climbers. Between beaches with white pebbles, lakes with shimmering water, works of art made from natural materials in the middle of the forest along the Ledro Land Art and Bosco Arte Stenico hiking trails and many breathtaking natural spectacles, including the gigantic Marmitte dei Giganti and the ten glacial fountains on the Antonio Stoppani Geological Trail, there really is something to marvel at around every corner!

There are also plenty of opportunities for learning: Discover the pile dwellings of Ledro and Fiavé together with your children and immerse yourself in the life of people in prehistoric times, follow in the footsteps of dinosaurs in the Marocche Nature Park, imagine you are a knight as you stroll through the halls of a castle or take a walk through an exciting open-air gallery. Particularly curious kids can spend a day on an educational farm, where you can experience animals up close and learn a lot about life in the mountains.

Initiatives for safe outdoor adventures

In addition to outdoor-friendly accommodation options and practical services for anyone who likes to be active outdoors - such as a network of "bike stops", repair stations for bicycles and charging stations for e-bikes - the APT Garda Trentino also actively ensures that your stay is pleasant and safe all round. The "Outdoor Park Garda Trentino" project was launched in 2009 with the aim of maintaining and constantly improving the outdoor infrastructure in the entire region.

A team of professionals has been in place since 2022: the so-called "Garda Rangers". They are dedicated to checking and regularly maintaining all the hiking trails, cycle routes, climbing rocks and via ferratas in the outdoor park so that you can enjoy your adventures in Garda Trentino safely at all times.

Garda Trentino in winter

The "Mediterranean" microclimate in Garda Trentino doesn't stop outdoor enthusiasts even in winter. In addition to hikes, road bike tours, mountain bike excursions and climbing adventures, which are possible all year round, snow sports enthusiasts also get their money's worth in winter. Simply strap on your snowshoes or skis and explore Monte Stivo, the Rifugio Altissimo, the Rifugio Pernici or the area around the Tremalzo.

After an eventful day in the great outdoors, you can look forward to a delicious dinner in one of the cozy mountain huts.

A culinary tradition that smells of authenticity and real nature

In this magical borderland, different varieties of lake and river fish, such as Lake Garda trout and the rare Carpione, meet specialties from the land: for example, chestnuts from Drena, Bleggio walnuts (a Slow Food Presidio), mountain potatoes from Lomaso, saffron from the Ledro Valley, broccoli from Torbole and black truffles from Monte Baldo.

But the local cuisine also reveals traces of the Austro-Hungarian past: Bohemian gnocchi - potato dumplings filled with plums - and livanze, small pancakes served with powdered sugar and jam, are just some of the recipes that hark back to the time of exile of the population from the Ledro Valley.from the Ledro Valley (and other parts of Trentino) to Bohemia and Moravia during the First World War. You can still try these dishes today during your active vacation in Garda Trentino.

If you are in the area between Arco, Tenno and Varone, you should not miss out on a specialty with particularly ancient roots: Carne Salada - thinly sliced, seasoned beef served raw with a little local olive oil and Parmesan shavings or cooked.

And what goes better with it than an aromatic glass of wine? The best known is Nosiola, but there are many other varieties waiting to be discovered in the region's wineries and wine shops. The Nosiola grape is also used to make the famous Vino Santo Trentino DOC, one of the best dessert wines in Italy and the symbol of the Valle dei Laghi. The valley is also known for its grappa and other artisanal distillates, which you should definitely try!

Thanks to the mild climate, the northernmost olive trees in the world (with regular harvests) grow on the sun-drenched slopes of Garda Trentino. The extra virgin olive oil produced here - which has been awarded the DOP seal since 1998 - has a light, fruity taste and is sure to delight you.
