Like a rocky crescent moon, Monte Brione seems to emerge from the lake between Riva and Torbole. Here we have a circular route with a "strategic" view of Lake Garda.
It is practically impossible to miss Monte Brione at the northern part of Lake Garda. Like a rocky crescent moon, it seems to rise from the lake between the towns of Riva del Garda and Torbole. Here awaits an easy circular route, which offers us a "strategic" view of the lake and the "Busa" from 350 meters high.
In the local dialect, the "Busa" (the hole) refers to the flat area north of Lake Garda between Riva del Garda, Torbole, and Arco, which resembles a basin at the lake's edge.
This walk is ideal if you are interested in history, botany, and photography or if you just want to stretch your legs.
Author’s recommendation
Fill your water bottle at the fountain in Forte San Nicolò, there are no other fountains or refreshment points along the route.
Avoid the hottest hours in summer! Apart from some sections in the forest, the path is exposed to the sun. Don't forget your hat!
Even if the route is easy and you may start after a relaxing afternoon at the beach, remember that you are on a mountain path. Wear appropriate footwear, especially if you go all the way down into the forest.
The path is also suitable for children. However, some of the steps are quite high and may be tiring.

Austrian fortifications from World War I
Monte Brione not only offers a wonderful view but also houses some of the fortifications that were part of the border defense line of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War I. Along the route, these are: Forte S. Nicolò on the lake side, Forte Garda along the ascent, Forte Batteria di Mezzo at the summit of Monte Brione, and Forte S. Alessandro along the descent. The remains of tunnels, observation posts, trenches, and military roads are still well visible.
The interiors of Forte Garda can be visited free of charge daily in summer and on weekends in spring and autumn. Tours and initiatives are organized by the Museum Alto Garda in Riva del Garda.
Natura 2000 protection area with over 20 orchid species
Due to the presence of more than 500 plant species typical for both mountain and Mediterranean regions, Monte Brione is also designated as a protected area of the European Natura 2000 network. Many of these species are very rare and grow exclusively on the shores of Lake Garda. More than 20 orchid species alone have been counted.
Roadbook
From the parking lot on Via Brione, we cross the Gardesana road towards the harbor and Forte San Nicolò. Leave the harbor on your right and watch out for bicycles. Step back slightly onto the bike path until you reach the first concrete steps.
Take a breath, and the climb begins, mainly up steps in the shade of small trees. Some viewpoints invite you to rest your legs, enjoy the landscape, visit Forte Garda, and read the information boards explaining the entire biotope and the history of Monte Brione.
Now the forest opens, and we are on a ridge path, which is well protected towards the steep slope by a wire fence.
After a stretch through olive groves, we reach the Forte Batteria di Mezzo at the summit of Monte Brione at 350 m altitude. If you climb to the left, you reach a natural balcony with a wonderful panoramic view.
From here we pass the fortress, go down the stairs, and in the curve take the right fork into the forest. We follow the cemented road for a few meters and then keep right at the fork towards Forte Sant'Alessandro.
Behind the fort begins the descent on a comfortable forest path that leads us down to the asphalt road. We continue straight here and immediately turn right into Via Sant Alessandro and then into Via Brione to return to the parking lot.
Shortcut
If the path becomes too long, it is possible to shorten the route by taking the asphalt road downhill after Forte Batteria di Mezzo.
