Among Hungary’s medium mountain ranges, Gerecse is generally not among the most popular destinations for tourists, yet it is full of attractions. Those who have visited this area or walked one of the long distances of the Gerecse Endurance Hikes as one of the thousands of participants are personally acquainted with many of the beauties hidden by the mountain range.
The former "government hunting area" still contains large uninterrupted forests and numerous natural and cultural sights. Many plant and animal rarities, beautiful villages, and the lively cultural life of Slovaks and Germans who have lived together with Hungarians for centuries enliven the region.
Walking along this unique 40 km route gives you a complete picture of the sights of the mountain range, and at the end of the hike, passing under the Turul bird towering over Tatabánya, you can be sure that Gerecse has captured your heart…
The route can naturally be walked anytime, not only on the day of the endurance hike. You can register for the Gerecse 50 routes on the official website, where you can find more information. On-site registration is not possible.

Detailed description of the hike
Our hike starts from Szent Borbála Square in Tatabánya. Heading north along Komáromi Street from the square, we reach the P● trail marking near the county library, which we follow straight through the central parts of Tatabánya. After residential areas, crossing under the motorway, we first reach weekend garden plots, then forested areas, soon arriving at the developed rest area at János Spring.
Our path begins to ascend here, first following the P● marking, then turning left onto P+, finally switching to the P marking. At the end of this long ascent, we arrive at the hilltop where various hiking routes branch off. Our 40 km hike here turns left onto the S marking, leading us through pleasant forests to near the Baji hunting lodge, located at the resting benches of the Puszta Temple (Peter Church) (checkpoint 1).
Here, we continue right on the P marking, passing by the Baji hunting lodge and heading to Tardos. After descending alongside a side road, we soon reach an asphalt road. Crossing it, on the opposite side after the barrier we return to the forest, following the P+ marking. After a short climb past the quarry, easy kilometers follow at the top. On the northern side of Gorba Peak, we approach Tardos settlement on an increasingly steep path. We reach the centre of the village and the Kemencés restaurant through a picturesque small street. Here, turning right, we follow the Z and K+ markings leaving Tardos. When the two trail marks diverge, we follow the Z marking, bidding farewell for a time to those on the 50 km route. We climb up Bánya Hill, where the checkpoint 2 awaits us at the meeting point of K and Z markings. From here, we join the National Blue Trail K marker, which is also the route of the 50 km distance again. We descend on the blue trail until Koldusszállás. Just before the hunting lodge, we sharply turn back about 100 meters to continue on the S marking. Soon passing by the ruins of Kisrét hunting lodge (checkpoint 3), we turn sharply left and continue on the S◼ marking. Hearing the increasingly loud sounds of the motorway, we soon arrive at the concrete road leading up to Turul (checkpoint 4). Turning right here on the S+ marked route, we reach the emblematic Turul statue (checkpoint 5).
After enjoying the panorama, we follow the P marking down a serpentine staircase to Tatabánya, soon joining the already known P● marking. Turning left here, we cross the already known route to the endpoint at nearby Szent Borbála Square.

Recommended maps for this region:
Equipment
- Very well broken-in hiking boots (never start a longer distance with newly purchased hiking shoes!)
- Effective protection against mosquitoes and ticks
- Raincoat and warmer clothes for cold weather
- If you sweat a lot, bring another top to change during the hike! It's easier to catch a cold in wet clothing.
- Reserve fluids and food to recharge between checkpoints. Only bring food in moderation, and drink only water! A few apples might be useful. It is not recommended to eat or carry more than four sandwiches during the hike.
- In strong sunshine, hat and sunscreen use is recommended.
