A Gerecse közepén fekvő Tardos vörösmészkő-bányája mellett idős erdőt találunk, méghozzá a hegység legidősebb fáival. A helyszín érdekessége nemcsak a hatalmas, használatban lévő bányaudvar közelsége, hanem hogy az erdő részben felhagyott külszíni fejtések sziklás felszínein jött létre, díszletszerű hátterek előtt növekvő, furcsa alakú fákkal.
A Gerecse északkeleti, azonos nevű hegycsúcsával fémjelzett csoportjához tartozik a 465 m magas Bánya-hegy. Két idősebb, 140-180 éves erdőrészlet északkelet felől határolja a kőfejtőket, miközben egy barlang bejáratát is rejtik. Összterületük alig több mint 10 hektár. Állami kezelésben vannak az erdők, védett területen állnak, nincs bennük faanyagtermelés. Az idősebb erdőrészlet elegyes gyertyánosként, a fiatalabb kőrisesként szerepel a nyilvántartásban.
Aki esetleg végigjárta a Kinizsi 100-as teljesítménytúrát, alighanem elballagott a helyszín mellett. A poros aszfaltútról ösvényeken közelíthető meg az idős fákból álló erdőrészlet. Egy félreeső, régen felhagyott kőfejtőben Angkor romtemplomait idézi a látvány, ahogyan egy-egy fa csavarodva-kúszva veszi körül a vöröses kőtömböket, egyensúlyozik a sziklák tetején, kapaszkodik a törmelékes lejtőkön.

- A buszmegállótól kövessük a Kossuth Lajos utcát nyugat felé, majd forduljunk jobbra a Z jelzésen. Erről az erdőben a 2., jobbra kiágazó, jelzetlen ösvényen kell letérni, hogy az idős fák közé jussunk (1,9 km, 139 m szintemelkedés).
