Among domestic performance hikes, one of the oldest and most popular challenges is the Gerecse 50. Held every year since 1982 on the third Saturday of April, one of its distances is the 10 kilometers, which, besides the sports experience, offers the beauty and panorama of the forest landscape surrounding Tatabánya.
The main attraction of Gerecse performance hikes lies primarily in the community experience. Many regard the event starting from Tatabánya as a friendly or family program, where all age groups from children to seniors are present. The hike distances are characterized by picturesque forest scenery, flowery meadows, splendid panoramas, and comfortable terrain, combined with excellent organization and good logistics, creating favorable conditions for those seeking relatively easy achievements or beginner performance hikers.
Gerecse 10
The 10-kilometer distance touches on spectacular and notable locations in Gerecse, such as János spring at the border of Tatabánya, the forest of Farkas valley, the picturesque clearing of Halyagos meadow, or the panoramic Turul statue overlooking Tatabánya, to mention just a few highlights of the route. The latter location is in fact touched by all four distances of the hike; therefore, it has become a symbol not only of Tatabánya but also of the Gerecse performance hikes.
The route can of course be walked at any time beyond the performance hike day.

-
On the other side of the road, we proceed right among the trees towards János spring.

Soon, for a short section, we walk together with the P+ marking; from here follow the latter.

- At the ruins of Kisréti hunting lodge, we turn right to the P+ marking.

Detailed route description
We start our hike from Megyeháza square in Tatabánya. Heading north along Komáromi street, we reach the P+ marking at the county library, which we follow straight on, passing through central Tatabánya. After the residential areas, passing under the motorway, we reach first weekend garden areas then wooded terrain, and soon arrive at the developed rest area of János spring.
Our path then starts to ascend, following the P● marking, then turning left onto the P+ marking, and finally switching to the P marking. At the end of this long ascent, we arrive at the top of Hajagos, where various hiking routes branch off.
Here our route turns right and descends on a wide, sloping cart road along the S marking to the junction at the ruins of the Kisrét hunting lodge (checkpoint 1). A few meters before the ruined house, we turn to the P+ marking, which soon switches to the P marking for the rest of the route. Following a gentle but prolonged climb, we reach the iconic Turul statue (checkpoint 2).
After enjoying the panorama, continuing to follow the P marking, we descend via a serpentine stairway to Tatabánya, where we soon join the P● marking, turning left to walk back on the already known path a few hundred meters to Megyeháza square.
