On just under 100 km, we discover Germany's second largest wine-growing region and experience the sun-drenched Palatinate at its finest. The cycle path runs the entire length along the western edge of the Rhine plain and crosses many valleys of the streams from the Palatinate Forest. This results in a constant up and down with partly short and steep summits. Countless vintners' farms welcome cyclists with open gates.
Gentle wine country, lush orchards, the Palatinate Forest with quiet valleys and murmuring streams, and a Mediterranean climate – this is what the German Wine Route offers. Germany's first wine tourism route begins in the north at Bockenheim (near Worms) and ends after about 85 km at the French border in Schweigen. From Maikammer to Schweigen, this section is also called the Southern Wine Route.
The wine gives the landscape its very special character. Here the attractions of the Palatinate Forest combine with the vineyards, as well as numerous castles and palaces – Hambach Castle, Wachtenburg, Neuleiningen Castle, Trifels, Villa Ludwigshöhe Palace, to name just a few. In small cozy wine taverns, but also modern wine shops, the vintners show their skills. You should also try the typical Palatinate specialties: stuffed pig's stomach (Saumagen), liver dumplings, white asparagus. Gourmets will also be pleased. Countless wine festivals offer guests the opportunity to convince themselves of the quality of the wines and to get to know the open, cheerful Palatinate people.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Be considerate on the move - Always behave in a foresighted, friendly, and considerate manner toward everyone you meet on the way. This applies especially to farm tracks where vintners, farmers, and foresters also work at weekends.
- Picnic & rubbish - Remember a rubbish bag for the journey and take waste back home with you. Use only furnished rest areas for breaks & picnics.
- Nature conservation - Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest to avoid disturbing the rhythm of nocturnal animals.

Safety information
Cycling on farm tracks - Our cycling routes often run on paths that we share with others. We therefore ask for always considerate and friendly behavior. Vintners, farmers, and foresters use the farm tracks through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work – also on weekends. Due to work assignments and/or weather conditions, the paths can sometimes be more heavily soiled. Special caution is also required when sharing the roads in and around Palatinate villages. Road closures and detours must be strictly observed.
Danger situations - If there is an emergency, quick help is needed. And even though cell phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points are often the fastest way. These are located at places that are easily accessible for rescue vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when you call for help. This way, rescue workers will know where to find you.

From here, the cycle path continues via the scenic wine towns of Wachenheim, Forst, and Deidesheim to Neustadt an der Weinstraße. A visit to the historic old town and a detour to Hambach Castle, known as the cradle of German democracy, is worthwhile there.
Below Hambach Castle the route continues to Maikammer. For trained cyclists, the detour via the panoramic route to St. Martin is recommended.
Further south, the main path runs via Edenkoben and Rhodt unter Rietburg, known for its famous Theresienstraße. From Rhodt, another detour via the panoramic route to Weyher is possible.
The main route continues through the idyllic winegrowing communities of Hainfeld, Burrweiler, Gleisweiler, Frankweiler, Siebeldingen, and Birkweiler. Accompanied by castles, it continues south via Leinsweiler, Eschbach, and Klingenmünster to the spa town of Bad Bergzabern. From there, it is only a stone's throw away via the Sleeping Beauty village Dörrenbach to the German Wine Gate in Schweigen-Rechtenbach at the border with Alsace. The German Wine Route cycle path ends in Schweigen-Rechtenbach. The route is planned up to the Wissembourg (Alsace) train station, so you can conveniently take the train back.
