The Elwetritschebrunnen fountain (built in 1978) is simply fabulous. No two of the mythical Palatinate creatures are alike. Legendary birds, half animal, half human, but with oh so human traits. Children love it and adults are fascinated by the Elwetritschebrunnen fountain designed by Professor Gernot Rumpf. Take the time to marvel at the details...

Origin: The Elwetritschen are described as chicken-like in the broadest sense. However, it is said that they could hardly use their wings, which is why they mainly had to stay in the undergrowth or under the vines. Sometimes Elwetritschen are depicted with deer antlers and their beak often appears very long. In the second half of the 20th century, artists increasingly began to distinguish Elwetritschen as female by depicting the creatures with breasts. Elwetritschen are said to come from crosses between chickens, ducks and geese with goblins and elves living in the forest. As the offspring of poultry, they lay eggs, and these grow during the nesting period because of the forest ghosts. Eggs in different sizes and maturation stages are artistically depicted in the Elwetritschebrunnen fountain in Neustadt an der Weinstraße.
